Unboxing The Pilot Pensemble Pen Case

Here ends my long search for an affordable, leather 3 to 4-pen case with a slot for business cards. Montblanc, Visconti and Conway Stewart produced cases in the approximate format a few years ago.

But, the pen companies have taken upon themselves to discontinue what would clearly be a popular item. This pretty beat-up example from Dubai attracted 27 bids and fetched US$180.

The Pilot Pensemble line is the cheaper brother of Pilot x Somes. The pen wraps and cases come in two finishes - black leather lined with grey pig suede and brown leather lined with beige big suede. Mine is in the latter. It was purchased on Taobao at Pilot's list price, 6000 YEN or 60 USD, and shipped for free to compensate for a dog-eared outer box.

Here it is, in a sturdy cardboard box with silver lettering.

The leather is pleasant, soft and textured. But, it is quite thin, and stiffened by a layer between the exterior and lining.

My phone cannot capture the colour correctly. It is a very dark, chocolate brown, with the slightest, faintest hint of red. Both the exterior and interior are veggie tanned.

Here is my biggest gripe: The pig suede is stiffened, and the fabric underside is not smooth where it comes into contact with pens. Will one of my beloved MB 146s be scratched?

At 60 USD shipped, it was good value. If the fabric proves to be safe, it would get full marks.

how big are the suede tubes? can they hold a 149 comfortably?

I will post an update when my sole 149 is back, which should be very soon.

the coolest thing about the Dubai example is the windows in the pen tubes. My pens are all Sheaffer Imperials. They all have the same caps, more or less, so the only way I know which pen I want to draw out and use is if I can see the barrel. I have modified some of my pen cases and rolls to include the window.

I ride a recumbent, I play go, I use Macintosh so of course I use a fountain pen.

Whitedot, you may like to take a look to this case (http://www.engeika.com/product/507 ). Of course no affiliation with the seller.

I own one. I think it is not real leather, but they are very close to the old good Visconti cases. They have satin inside and the slots are very very soft, not stiff at all. A Mb 146 can be confortable in the tubes; a 149 will be a little tight, but it fits (at least in mine it does). They are good for the money...

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
