Saw this article and, it would seem, that Hero may be within their legal rights to copy the same design in a product of their own manufacture.

 

I own no Lamy pens (have wondered about the huge following of the Safari since I worked in a pen store in '03 and thought the pen was simply a cheap plastic pen) and have never really been interested ingettingon.

 

In reading this thread, based on the review/s referenced, it seems that the Hero pen reflects its low quality manufacture and assembly very well. It may go well with the people who can not afford a real Lamy but, if its limited performance and quality continue, it would seem that even those people looking for a bargain would not spend money for a pen the works poorly.

 

Just my .02 cents.

I am aware that the Safari has always been a much coveted pen in China, even among knowledgeable enthusiasts, just for being imported from Germany. It's no great surprise that it was imitated.

 

Regarding the Lishui works: it is my understanding that it was first established as a joint venture between Hero and some local investors as a maker of pen components for use by Hero Shanghai. Later, Lishui gained the rights to use the Hero name for its products, while its operation remains autonomous to a certain extant.

I have a dilemma, though: Has anyone paid any tribute(at least) for the technologies that the westerners took from the Chinese(and there are lots of stuff)? i never heard of a chinese complaining about this.

I noticed that is part of a mentality: take All, give Nothing. Some countries have become quite rich by employing such schemes along the centuries.

 

And now some people complain that the chinese are replicating the Lamy design or that of those awful Gucci bags(etc etc). Go figure !

The Chinese culture is certainly one of the richest in history and the technology they have supplied to the world ranks with the highest and best humanity has had to offer. I think the fact makes the current culture relies on blatant theft a reason for sorrow, not of praise.

Umm. I think China is always credited with the invention of gunpowder and all the dubious benefits to the world that lead to. All crockery tends to be referred to as 'China', which may be a homage of some sort. It's also acknowledged that Tea was got out of China by deception.

I've never seen a nib like that one where the breather hole and the slit don't connect. Some new Chinese technology that I don't understand?

Yes, please someone explain that unusual placement of breather hole to me, too? lol. The next evolution in nib design & engineering??? Well, at least they *did not* clone the Lamy entirely. hehe.

I have been seeing more of the Hero Safari clone pop up on Instagram in the last two weeks. Mainly from hipsters in Hong Kong and China. What is interesting, though, is that they also own Lamy Safaris and so its not like they bought the clone because it was cheaper. Maybe they find it simply amusing to own a Hero clone.

Morbid curiosity keeps me looking at these pens. I suspect they will be a disappointment.
