Pilot 77

Thought I'd post some observations on the Pilot 77. Like others here, I purchased mine NOS at Luis Store. (Side note: it's my first foray into older pens. It was scintillating.)

 

Just below the cap are engraved these three lines: NAMARCO//PILOT 77//MADE IN JAPAN. On the cap and the nib are engraved PILOT.

It's really more of a good workhorse pen than one for high flourish, as you can see--you're not going to get really thick lines. The nib feels resilient and a bit springy--definitely my favorite feature of the pen, along with its slim body (I have small hands and prefer svelte pens) and early 1960's color scheme. The shape of the nib, however, makes it prone to nib creep or at least ink collecting in the crevices. Here's a close-up:

What a cute little pen. Is it a cartridge/converter pen? The tipping has more to do with smoothness than wether the nib is gold or steel. I've never heard of this model, sorry they stopped making them.

It is a nice tip, well-aligned and all that; I mention the gold because I think I read somewhere that the tip is gold.

 

It's not a C/C; the filling mechanism is a sac encased by a metal sleeve with a lever on the top. Design-wise, it's quite similar to this pen except for the cap. I haven't tried cartridges or other converters with it as the bladder is in good shape.

I totally agree with your comments. I recently bought this pen from a man in Santa Catarina state in Brasil. It had belonged to his grandfather. The pen has an engraving on the barrel that says: "PILOT 77 IND BRASILEIRA", which means it was manufactured in Brazil in the 60's. I had to replace the sac, which was pierced, and clean it. Because it still stuttered, I found out how to easily remove the nib simply by pulling it, and cleaned it of old residue. Since then, it became a great writer that never leaves my daily pen case.
