Looking For Waterproof, Non-Noodler's, Inks

Pensfan

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

As I mentioned in other threads, I'll be attending graduate school in the fall and I am taking my fountain pens with me. I am now looking for some new inks to try out as well. Some of the properties I am looking for...

Waterproof - to the point where it won't smear after dried. I don't want rain drops or spilled coffee to ruin notes.

Quick Drying - having to wait too long to turn pages will be hard to manage while taking notes.

Non-Noodlers - I love Noodler's inks for most applications... however they have a tendency to creep quite a bit and my nibs and caps end up covered in ink. I don't mind a little bit of ink on my fingers, but some of them get pretty messy.

Colors - Not a deal breaker, but I would like blue, black, and a dark green if possible.

The Noodler's Warden series inks are awesome in color and performance in all but the creeping. I just have a hard time dealing with them in anything but a hooded nib.

Thanks!

If you are not opposed to iron-gall inks, the first to come to mind are Diamine Registrar's (blue-black) and Montblanc Midnight Blue (blue). As for green, I'm drawing a blank outside of Noodler's.

There's also Salix and Scabiosa in Iron Gall, they're Blue and Purple.

Platinum and Sailor make pigmented inks for fountain pens, both make a black and Platinum does a blue and Sailor a blue(teal)-black. Sailor does some other colors. All of these are waterproof.

Hi,

In addition to the fine suggestions above, I'll mention Pilot Blue* and Blue-Black. Both are no fuss go-to inks for run of the mill stuff.

As for a highly water resistant Green, you might find some joy by mixing Noodler's 'bulletproof' Yellow highlighter ink 'Year of the Golden Pig' with a water resistant Dark Blue ink, such as Diamine Sapphire or their [WES] Imperial Blue. It may well be a bit more vivid than expected :)

BTW, if you do highlight stuff, adding a bit of Blue to Noodler's YotGP or Firefly gives a pale Green that remains visible under warm light sources, such as incandescent tungsten bulbs.

Pelikan 4001 Blue-Black is good at this sort of thing too but might be hard to get in the US. Their Brilliant Black, together with Sheaffer Black, are remarkably water-resistant.

Thank you for all the help everyone!

So in doing research on this topic, I also came across an article by Richard Binder stating that the nib not being aligned / flow control out of whack contributes more to nib creep than the ink itself. If that is so, would it be worth sending my pens to Richard or another nibmeister to check out my two worst offending pens?

Whatever Sandy says...

Oh, but I'd suggest Sailor Nano inks. Oooo Sheeny....

Pensfan, Richard isn't doing repairs anymore. If the pens are creeping enough to get on your hands then sending them out might be a good idea. Just keep in mind that repairs take a while.

Sailor Nano Black...doesn't dry extremely quickly, but it doesn't move at all from the page after drying, and neither does Sei-boku.

You can fix the creeping problem by waxing the pen where the creeping occurs. Car wax will work. Don't get any in the nib's slit.

Just wanted to add De Atramentis Document ink - one, two, three, or four colours available, depending on the phase of the moon or something. Slight tendency to bleed.

There is a massive list somewhere on FPN - you could search.

I am no longer very active on FPN but feel free to message me. Or send me a postal letter!

From my experience

For black:

Platinum Carbon Black

Sailor Kiwa-Guro

With both of those, the only way it's coming off the page is mechanical abrasion. Water does next to nothing to them. I give +1 to the Sailor for the smell. It takes me back to lab days.

For blue-black:

R&K Salix - blue will wash out leaving the grey/black I-G behind

Sailor Sei-Boku - I really don't think of this as "blue-black", but once it's on the page it's not likely to go anywhere in response to water.

I have yet to try the Diamine Registrar's Ink that I got a sample of. Not sure what to put it in yet.

I tried the waxing trick, still had nib creep with Polar Blue. The ink has since found its way into the sink.

As far as other colors go, Platinum makes a variety of pigmented inks, but not sure how FP friendly they are.

If you are willing to settle on black, Platinum Carbon Black meets all your criteria. It's simply a great water-resistant ink that dries relatively quickly and keeps steady under even heavy washes of water or color. I use it daily for sketching and watercolor techniques:

http://www.pictogramax.com/2013/06/07/esquisse-de-jour-032-chromium/

I was also intrigued by iron-gall inks and did my three-part testing of Diamine Registrar's:

http://www.pictogramax.com/2012/06/29/diamine-registrars/

http://www.pictogramax.com/2012/06/30/diamine-registrars-round-two/

http://www.pictogramax.com/2012/07/01/diamine-registrars-round-three/

That led to buying R&K Scabiosa that I like even better:

http://www.pictogramax.com/2012/12/01/scabiosa/

I will just add that all these examples are done with heavy application of water. I believe that by just writing you will rarely find yourself in similar conditions and that any of these ink would be fine. If just for writing, I would choose Scabiosa for it's beautiful color and non-feathering properties.

Another that I found that meets all criteria is ESSRI, which I cannot say enough positive things about. Most definitely water proof, easy cleaning, somewhat dry flow, blue/black, iron Gaul, and remarkably inexpensive for the quantity of ink!

I'm also looking for a waterproof ink. I found a Pilot blue ink on ebay (named Pokybaby) and am wondering if its the same ink as you used: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Pilot-fountain-pen-ink-30-Blue-ink-bottle-30ml-/321020463923?hash=item4abe4f8b33.

Hi,

The ink I used came in 70ml bottle. Even though there is a difference in packaging, I strongly suspect it is the same ink in the 30ml bottle.

http://i783.photobucket.com/albums/yy116/Sandy1-1/FPN_2013/Ink%20Review%20-%20Pilot%20Blue%20Bottle%202/P2244853a_zps2ebb4a88.jpg

eB@y Seller 'engeika' offers the same ink that I have (70ml bottle; Item 170930337411). When I saw Item 170930342513, I thought one could ask engeika if 350ml bottles of Pilot Blue are available.

(Finding a hogshead of tsuki-yo seems unlikely, so I wrote Santa instead of engeika.)

Thanks Sandy1. It's good to have confirmation that it is probably the same ink. I looked at Engeika's store but it looks to me like it would actually work out cheaper for me to get the 30ml bottle due to postage costs. Anyway, think I'll just order that one and if I like it will see if there's an economical way to get a bigger one next time.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
