Montblanc Ink - What Color Is It?

Today I received a used MB 146 in the mail. The seller included a bottle of MontBlanc ink.

The bottle is labelled:

Mont

Blanc

The art of Writing

Tinge . Encre . Tinta . Ink

Made in W. Germany 52ml

There is no color name. And there is no color "dot". There is nothing to indicate the color.

The bottle is one of the regular MB ink bottles: looks a bit like a shoe with a heel. Jagged edges with a star cap, and the "heel" section to concentrate ink for filling. The not-cap end is rounded (I've seen pictures of others where the end is square.

The ink is what I would call "blue-black".

Is there a date range where MB didn't indicate the color of the ink on the label? Any guesses what color it might be? Since they have a relatively small range of ink colors, I'm hoping this information is enough to narrow it down.

Thanks for any info you might have!

This sounds like late 80s early 90s "Blue-Black," which is what Midnight Blue was called until just a few years ago. If this bottle has been opened and used at all, I should think the ink may be on the dry side but still perfectly safe to use.

That makes sense. The pen is an 80s model. I bought it from some Dr. It wouldn't surprise me if he tried the pen a few times, decided it wasn't for him, and at long last put the two up for auction.

Please be aware that the blue black ink from Montblanc is permanent not washable and it's an 'iron gall' version of ink. Please don't allow it to dry out in your 146 or it will be quite difficult to clean out

I have the same MB bottle as you describe. ie no colour dot and 52ml contents. I also have the original box which clealy has a colour patch on both ends of the box, mine is red, the box also proudly claims that the ink contains 'Supercleaner SC21'. I suspect that the box was the way to identify the colour of inks in this era.

The next bottle I have does display the colour dot and, although it stands a bit higher, contains 50ml of ink. I think this was from the mid 90's. Oh and the new 'square toed boot' has 60ml of ink in them.

Oooh, thanks for the heads up. I always have too many pens inked, so the chance of one going dry is fairly high. Usually it's not a problem, but in this case sounds like it would be.

Just as well. I wouldn't mind an excuse to dump the fill cuz the color doesn't do much for me. I'd rather put in a Noodler's Bad Blue Kingfisher or maybe Lamy or Quink Blue-Black instead.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
