Do You Keep The Pen Boxes?

Just put all my pens into the new pen box I received, and now I have quite a big array of fountain pen boxes - question is do I keep them - if I did want to resell my pens at any stage will it really matter if I don't have the box?

depends on what the pen is, if it is a Lamy Safari for example it probably would not matter but if it is an expensive pen like a L.E or really any expensive pen I would keep the box if you ever want to sell it!

Definitely keep the boxes for any pens that cost you, say, more than $200, and that you think there is any chance you might want to sell one day. The more expensive pens (and especially limited editions) often come in very nice boxes that are absolutely worth keeping. For less expensive pens, especially those selling for under $100, I don't think it matters myself.

I always keep the boxes. I think it's nice when you purchase a new pen (new or used) to have the box. I think when I buy a used pen that comes with the box and other packaging it shows that extra bit of care on the part of the seller. At least I hope it does when I sell pens with their boxes!

Yes I have a small (but growing) pile of empty boxes even though its doubtful that I could ever bring myself to sell any of my pens. At the age of 63, one day my kids may decide to break up the collection when I'm dead and gone, so its for them really. (I will leave instructions on which pen goes in which box - maybe  )

Hi,

The other day I got a Pelikan 120 with its original box and papers.

It is a simple cardbox but I'm glad someone kept it all these years.

If you can afford the space to store them, I say keep'em.

Regards,

I keep them. I'm not sure why I do though. I have a big pile of boxes that I always end up moving from place to place because they are in my way.

This is not an April Fool...

My storage unit was recently burglarized, and while quite a number of relatively expensive items were stolen, oddly enough the thief (thieves) also took a large plastic bin with 90% of my pen boxes. Empty pen boxes. Who knew?

The collector boxes, such as the Montblanc Brahms Donation Pen box, are kept in my home and are fine.

My now-revised thinking is that the quality of the box itself should probably be the deciding factor in what I keep henceforth. For example, the nice wood boxes Syd provides with many of the excellent new Wahl-Eversharp pens is definitely a keeper.

Weird.

I have the boxes for both Waterman Phileas (with papers!) and my True Writer. Not sure what happened to the one for my Lamy Al Star... Have the one for my Waterman Hemisphere rollerball even I think......

I don't have an in-desk storage system for my pens, so I keep the boxes. When I take a pen out of rotation, especially a delicate pen, it can live in the box for a week or two without risking damage.

I keep the boxes and store them in a large cardboard box. When I sell pens, it's nice to provide an entire package that is as much like the original as possible, regardless of price. I even sold my Noodler's Creapers with their original boxes and pamphlets. It may not matter to the buyer, but to me it's fun, like wrapping a present.

I keep them all.

It's gotten to be a problem - I said to my husband just last week that I have to find some place to store all the boxes instead of multiple desk and dresser drawers that are needed for real-life stuff (like clothes).

Just yesterday, I teased my daughter in our Sunday afternoon phone call, telling her that some day in about 35 - 40 years, she would get the job of matching up boxes and researching loads of pens, teapots, and Christmas ornaments to get the best price when she sells my collections. She informed me that she could hire an estate sales consultant to do all that - and that she thought it would be well worth their fee!

I keep them as storage. When I'm not using that pen, it goes back in its origional box. I don't have a pen case, so using the origional box is my only option.

I'm in woodshop now, so I may build myself a nice display case. If I did, I'd throw away most of the boxes, but I'd probably save the Montblanc ones (I keep the MB ink boxes too, the ink bottle stays in them most of the time). If you want to sell the pens in the future, the origional box could add some value...

Yes, I do as well. Both for storage should I be setting a pen aside for a while, but also to keep things nice for either gifting or selling. Only exception to date is the cardboardy affair my Lamy 56 came in. When I passed it along to my husband, he saw no use for the box and I couldn't justify keeping it either. He figures to keep the pen anyway. ;)

Agreed, keep them all. I collect knives also, and having the original box and shipping material definitely makes a difference. You may not think you will EVER sell a particular item, but tastes and circumstances do change...l

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
