I bought one of the small bottles of DBlBk at the Ohio Pen Show in November. I was wondering if it was the new formula or not, but it seems to be the old one given that mine shades. I prefer the colour of the reformulation, but it's unfortunate that it lost the shading qualities. Seems more like a deep blue now rather than a blue black?

The R2 version was released in the Summer of 2012, but hadn't made its stateside debut until October. I speculate that Distributors / Vendors were clearing ye olde version from their inventory prior to offering the R2 version at the retail level.

 

I agree that there is a greater Blue aspect to the R2 version, which to me makes it more of a Blue-Black than ye olde version, which had the unfortunate Teal aspect.

. . (I'd often mix some Royal Blue into ye olde version to off-set the Teal.)

 

I agree that the low[er] shading potential of the R2 is a bit of a disappointment, but I hope that I can get a bit more shading with other pen+paper combos; and dilution might open-up the ink just a bit to reveal shading that could be hiding.

I'm torn about whether to buy or not. I'm pretty sure the sample I got recently from Goulet's is R2, but it's pretty close to Majestic Blue that I own and quite enjoy.

The difference between DBlBk-R2 and Diamine Majestic Blue is greater that of DBlBk-R2 and Diamine Indigo.

 

None of those inks are considered a powerhouse of shading.

I have two pens filled with this currently - my Phileas with a fine and my Al Star with a fine. I had a Goulet sample of it that I ran through my M nibbed Phileas and I really like the way it looks in all three.

 

Thanks for the review, Sandy. Again I really like this. If I had to migrate away from the Pelikan this would be a worthy replacement.

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

I was using the old (R1) version, fantastic color but a tendency to clog pens if left unused for 1+ weeks.

Gave up because the only way to unclog some of them was a complete nib+feeder disassembly.

 

Hope the new version has fixed this trouble.

Diamine Blue Black was not black enough for my taste so now I use equal ratios of Onyx Black and Majestic Blue to get a colour I like and is passable for work.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I recently bought several boxes of Diamine mixed cartridges (buying 5 different boxes allowed me to try all 25 colours that Diamine do in cartridges - seemed like a good way to try lots of colours) and one of the first I have tried is the Blue Black. It has a definite dark teal flavour to it - does that mean it is, most likely, the old formulation?

It is possible, I suppose. Here are the two scans I did; as and when I got the inks so there is a bit of a time gap between them. As with all my scans though; once they are done they stay in the dark, as it were.

First the 'original one.

I can see the teal in this!

Then the R2 version.

I think there is a significant difference. There is another ink that falls somewhere in between - Diamine Twilight.

Mine looks a bit darker than the first one (then again it's in a medium nib with a fairly fast flow, so perhaps it would) but is definitely closer to that than the second one. Probably old stock then. Thanks for that, a very fast helpful response!

The Diamine Blue-Black R2 looks very similar, if perhaps a bit llghter, than the Diamine Denim I am currently using with great success in my Snorkel. More like a dark blue, less like a blue-black.

 

Completely agree! So close to Denim that I wouldn't rush out to buy it. Maybe when my Denim runs out I may give it a go, but for now, i'll pass...

I have been using some Diamine Blue/Black this very month and it has a distinct Teal shade to it.

I am not dis-respecting Diamine. If it says blue/black on the label, then that is what it should be in the bottle & on the paper when it dries.

It seems like the bottle was the earlier version.

      Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

      It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

      Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

      @asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
