Refilling Eyedropper Without A Dropper

Recommended Posts

I usually use a syringe, but I'm in a situation where I need to MacGuyver a way to refill an eye dropper with minimal mess. I was thinking about using a drinking straw (dip into ink bottle then put finger on the top to create a vacuum), but couldn't find any that were thin enough. Any other ideas?

I have directly tipped ink from the ink bottle into the open mouth of the pen barrel. It takes some practice initially, but once used to it, it is the quickest and neatest way to fill your pen. no ink wastage, no wiping needed, perfect!

If you cut a normal sized straw diagonally and pinch, you might be able to use it to fill the opening of smaller eyedroppers.

You could also use any available material (hopefully something that won't immediately absorb ink, like laminated paper or foil or something) to make a funnel so that it would be much easier to pour ink from a bottle.

in high school days, i used big ED pens and i used to fill directly by tipping the ink bottle, though am not confident now.

Ah the good old days! my dad used to fill my pens this way, I learnt it from him. only later, when disposable syringes became common and cheap that I started using a syringe for this task.

I use eyedropper plastic bottles to carry ink with me and fill my pen with minimal mess.

Of course MacGyver should remember to refill the bottle itself before leaving the house. Although some of these bottles are even 60 ml in capacity.

Oh, those are a pretty good idea. I think the best options are the ones that come in clear so you can see which ink you had available for refills. That way you could carry a couple and choose whichever one you felt like when you needed it.

If you know a nurse or someone who works in a medical lab or even a caring pharmacist, ask for an 18gauge blunt. They are usually almost two inches long, are perfect for filling almost any pen and they fit on all luer-lok syringes. If you can't find one pm me.

Hi,

If you have another FP, fill that with ink, then place the nib of that pen over the open barrel of the ED and empty the charged pen's ink into the ED.

A converter could be used in the same manner to transfer ink from the bottle to the ED.

I use hypodermic syringes. They are cheap and easily obtained. They cost 25cents at the pharmacy and if you are worried about the sharp end, take a file to it.

The 60ml is the girlyman size. One liter should be enough.

If you fill often enough, use an oil can.

Poor MacGyver. Even for him it's not like it used to be ...

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
