Hello From Near Brisbane, Australia

Hello folks, new member here from near Brisbane in Australia.

 

Picked up a reference to FPN from another forum that has a pen section, "The Nib" on Badger and Blade Forum, yes I am a traditional wet shaver as well.

 

Anyway I have had a fountain pen for many years although travel and work changes have meant that I have put it into storage on occasions. Mainly I use a Lamy 2000 which I think I bought back in the 1980's and have recently picked up a Safari to use as a beater around the office. Over the years I have used this and other pens on and off but as I am often taking notes these days and as I hate ballpoints I find that a FP is perfect for this.

 

Looking to pick up on tips on inks, paper, etc., although as I am a long way from the rest of the world the added time and cost of shipping things here will limit any out of control acquisition disorders that may be lurking. :-)

 

One thing I am fortunate in is that near where I work there is a specialty pen shop which has a good stock of items like inks and while they may be expensive compared to purchasing from internet sellers, the immediacy of being able to see the colors and just picking it up kind of offsets the risks of losing a fragile bottle of ink in the mail.

I grew up in bris vegas, which area are you in? And I'm curious which shop is close by? Next time I'm up there i'll have a wee look!

(And the shipping costs for pen and ink from say, the U.K seem quite reasonable.)

My personal experience, with live shopping in pen stores, is that the people

are very accomdating.

 

I still don't understand the connection between B&B and FPN, but I am glad

for it. For me, the great shave is a good brush and a Rolls Razor.

i've offered a new lamy 2000 in stainless steel to my mother but every time we open the cap there is a small ring of ink near the nib...you have the same prob?

I'm a north Brisbane guy, but I have lived elsewhere (Canberra, London, Boston & San Francisco), currently we are up in the Moreton Shire and I have a place I am preparing for retirement in a few years up behind the Sunshine Coast near Pomona/Cooroy.

 

There are two pen shops in Brisbane, one in the Brisbane arcade that runs between Queen and Adelaide Streets and the other at the end of Queen Street near Wharf Street, I think they are linked in some way as they use the same name and signage.

 

I'll have a look at the UK costs, the same applies to shaving items, pricing from the UK for many items including shipping is less than local retail costs.

I have noticed this when using 'wetter' inks, try a cheap but dry ink like a Pelikan 4001 and see if that solves the problem.

We have had a few holidays around Brisbane, both north and south.

One in Bargara, which I see has been very badly hit.

We had planned to retire out there back in 2005 but family changes made us pull out.

But, we'll be back.

Hi and welcome to FPN. I live in Redcliffe, just north Brisbane. My favourite pen store in town is the Penshoppe in the Brisbane Arcade. Its a very nice store and its where I bought my first Montblanc. They are fairly pricey however, but have good customer service and I go there to test the nib size for all pens I feel like buying online. Just some advice that you probably already know, but all the pen shops in Brissie have poor selection of paper, go check out Dymocks in town, it has a great selection of RHODIA and CLAIREFONTAINE paper in all shapes and sizes!
