Pilot Custom 74 - Fine Or Medium Nib

Hello! I am having trouble deciding between a Fine or Medium nib on the Custom 74. I own 2 Pilot Preras w/ a Fine and Medium Nib and while I like the nice crisp lines on the Fine best, it tends to be a little scratchy and I usually use the Medium because of it. Is the Custom 74 similar? I would really like to get the Fine, but I don't like the scratchiness!

Thanks! Probably a silly topic, but I have never spent this much money on a pen before and want to get the right one!

Hi......and :W2FPN:

No such thing as a silly topic here Mike..... :clap1:

I'm no expert....there will be some of those along in a while.....but I do have a Custom 74 in Medium....to be honest I bought a medium thinking that it would run 'fine' compared to a 'western medium' (if that makes sense) anyway....it turns out to be a 'true Medium' and a 'wet' writer....it's certainly not 'scratchy' at all....in fact I usually use 'dry' inks to stem the flow a little. My advice is if you want a fine...order a fine....you want medium order a medium...would you be able to try them first, or are you ordering over the Internet....if you have the chance, even if it's not the place where you want to buy from, 'try before you buy'

Just my 2p worth...others may find things different....as may you of course....whatever you choose I don't think you can go far wrong with a C74 :clap1:

My answer would be to order it from nibs.com and have John adjust the nib to your needs. You'll pay a bit more than if you order it from ebay but you'll get a better pen.

Hi ,

Would anyone mind posting writing samples of the Soft Fine Medium and/or Soft Medium nibs? I have a Prera in Fine and a 823 in Medium. I really like the 823 and the springy nib. Would love something softer in a smaller everyday pen like the Custom 74 or 91.

Hi,

The C74 + SFM appears in a few of my Ink Reviews, so you can get a vague idea of its characteristics by looking at a few of those Topics.

Unfortunately, during the recent upgrade / recovery of FPN, the functionality of the thumbnails to return full size images was lost. Should you have a pressing desire to see specific images that were represented by thumbnails, I can re-post a few of them, so please let me know via PM.

This is with almost not pressure applied. Too fine for me. My pelikan M200 fine is broader then the medium 74.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
