Lamy Nib Issue

I have a standard Lamy nib (Safari, etc.) in OM size. It writes very smoothly, but whatever ink I run through it looks thin, watered down. This nib is more difficult to remove from the feed than my other nibs as well. I've tried finding a gap between nib and feed but can't detect one. Anyone have any ideas?

Did you ink up your pen right after flushing it? I've noticed that if I ink it up my pen right after flushing the excess water left in the feed will dilute the ink.

No...i remove a nib working normally, put on this nib, and it behaves this way.

  • 2 weeks later...

Has this nib ever worked, or has it been like this from its first use?

I'm no expert, and this is me guessing, but it almost sounds like the nib got slightly bent vertically as though it were pinched at the sides, maybe even in manufacture, and that's what's giving it the super tight fit and slow flow. If you compare it with your other Lamy nibs under a loupe, is there any difference in the shape or curvature of this nib?

On the other hand, it could just be a loser nib. It happens.

Lamy nibs are very inexpensive, so you could either send it in for warranty replacement (?) or just buy a new one.

Good luck!

I was thinking that also, the nib was pinched. I purchased it on ebay.de for less than $5. The 1.1 and 1.5 nibs sent were fine, but the OM wasn't. It was also the only nib with no markings, no "Lamy" or "OM" on it. Anyway, yes it's no great loss, I can get another.

Thanks for responding!

No problem!

While the nib itself is useless to you in its current state, you might want to keep it and 1) see if a pair of needlenose pliers might help its attitude any, and/or 2) attach it to a 1/4" dowel in the event you ever need a dip nib for anything. It may well be counterfeit as well as defective, but that doesn't mean you can't get some use out of it, if you're so inclined to tinker with it.

I've been taken by a seller too, so I feel your pain. Nothing to do but make the best of it, eh? :D

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
