Picking A Cheap Calligraphy Pen/set

Hi guys!

This is my first post here so go easy on my n00bishness

I only recently discovered that Parker Vector pens also came with calligraphy nibs and I set my eyes on a kit equipped with three "calligraphy nib" sizes. Just now, however, I came across another set - Sheaffer Calligraphy Maxkit. I am familiar with Parker products, never had a problem and I have confidence in them. I was looking for someone to tell me what can be expected of a rather cheap Sheaffer product. Also, would it not be wiser to get a Lamy Joy with a calligraphy nib instead? My price limit would have to be around $40 at this time :(

Thanks in advance!

I've had direct experience with both, and I prefer the Sheaffers if they're not the absolutely new ones with the slanted caps. They're a little sharper than the Vector or the Joy, and rather more comfortable to use than the Vector.

It's mainly pens, just now....

Oh, good heavens. He's got a blog now, too.

I prefer the old Sheaffer No Nonsense pens with the calligraphy nibs over both the Vector and the newer Sheaffers.

Actually I like the Rotring Art Pens even better than either.

I have a friend at work, she is a head secretary in a middle school. She used to write out all the 8th grade diplomas by hand. She loves the Pilot Parallel Calligraphy Pens. She loves the price is good too.

Do not let old pens lay around in a drawer, get them working and give them to a new fountain pen user.

+1

I got all four sizes for $40.

Go to Goulet Pens. Nice price.

Sheaffer pens use Sheaffer cartridges. Pilot pens use Pilot cartridges. There's a bigger variety of colors in the Pilot line of cartridges.

I will add that the current production Sheaffer calligraphy pens are uncomfortable to use and dry out quickly. These pens have been made for a while and are most likely the ones you are looking at, get something else.

Hero 5028 three nibs. 1.1, 1.5, 1.9. About $10. Converter

I'm no calligrapher. I just use the 1.1 as a "highlight" writer.

BTW, its Chinese

I guess I'll go with the Pilot pens then. They do seem like more of a toy, but who knows, I'll have to see for myself in a few weeks when they arrive xD No supplier in the entire country seems to have heard of Pilot cartridges, so good thing there's a converter that comes with each pen. Thank you all for the help. :notworthy1:

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
