Expert Vs Hemisphere - Pros And Cons

Recommended Posts

I am keen on buying my first Waterman FP sometime soon.

Can people tell me the pros and cons in their opinion and experience with regard to the Hemisphere & the Expert Watermen to help me make my first decision.

I am comfortable with thick barreled pens which are heavy and may go for the stainless steel bodies in either case as I have read about the lacquer ones getting chipped with rough use.

Thanks.. That was a nice review.

Helped a bit.

I guess I need to try out the two pens at a shop and also try out the M and F nibs to see which one suits my style of writing.

I'm apt to get chased around the place by a torch-weilding mob, but I don't see the current Expert as worth the money while there's NOS Phileases in the world. The business end is essentially the same, the diameter similar, and with the brass insert in the Phileas there's not much to tell in the weight. The Expert's finish is less apt to collect scratches, but that's about the only real advantage it has. And of course, between Phileas and Hemisphere, there's mainly a question of width and looks. Choose the one that pleases your aesthetics best.

It's mainly pens, just now....

Oh, good heavens. He's got a blog now, too.

I am in general agreement with the gentleman from The Great White North.

The Experts do have the click securing post feature which is nice.

IMO the final renditions of the colored faux marble Phileasi look tacky. The 1st gen which can still be found on The Bay are much nicer. Of the last generation, to me, the Black Phileas is the nicer looking finish.

Don't bother with a Kultur, they look like a Phileas but aren't as nice.

I cannot speak for the Hemisphere or the Phileas, as I have not tried them. However, my husband gave me an Expert II for my birthday, and I love it. (I have the Fine nib.) I like the look of the nib, though some like the original Expert better. It writes like a dream. I'm pretty impressed with the durability, as I've carried it around in my purse, banged it about, and dropped it and it just has one small scratched area on the barrel. The blue color makes me very happy, but blue is my favorite color (along with mixes of blue/green), so that's pretty subjective. :) I even like the lovely sound the pen makes when clicking the cap on and off, or when posting it.

It has a lot of sentimental value to me, so I'm sure that has a lot to do with my love of it as well.

The nib quality is not too different when the Phileas, Hemisphere and Expert are compared?

I should have a look at these varieties before I make my mind.

Thanks a lot for your inputs. :)

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
