It's definitely a good deal. I was thinking of selling my green Phileas at double that! I'd never let it go for the current $30.

Where can one get it for 30? I tout it was discontinued.

I wonder if the similarity to the Kultur is hurting the secondary market for Phileases (Phileasi?)

I got a green marbled one that's most definitely a Phileas, brass insert and all, for like $20 off eBay a few weeks back (though I was lucky, it was just called Vintage Waterman Pen in the title). Probably the best pen in my collection even though it was among the cheapest non-Chinese pen I ever bought... smoothest writer too.

Prices for Phileas have been going up and down for the past two or three months, mostly on the high side. I know, because I was trying to locate a couple for friends. Six months ago and it was still pretty easy to get them for <$30, but now that takes a bit of luck.

At $75 'buy it now' it is quite high in my mind. Especially with $42 shipping!

Good grief, I hadn't noticed the shipping! That said, I don't know about this one, but I've seen a Phileas or two in the $70's recently...

Well, that is what they are *trying* to sell them for. I have no idea what Montgomery Pens has been smoking, but not many fetch *that* high a price.

A word of caution to anyone looking to buy a used Phileas. The nibs pit HORRIBLY, so I expect price pressure will increase for ones that don't have the problem . I've got one with a nib that is riddled with pits. You can't get replacement nibs for any kind of a reasonable price.

Good point!

I just nabbed one for $30... Possibly a Kultur - silver bands = Kultur?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
