Counterfeit Rotring Initial?

bObst

Recommended Posts

Hello all!

I was looking for a cheap fountain pen (like a vector or hero) to round an amazon purchase up to free shipping territory, and then I noticed a Rotring Initial selling for $30. I was under the impression that Initial's should sell closer to the $100, unless on sale. Would you agree that this is a probable counterfeit?

Thanks,

B

Probably just a close-out item; I don't think Amazon gets fooled by much counterfeit stuff.

Rotring has had its ups and downs and so a lot of stock that's just sitting around gets dropped from one level to another...and then Amazon prices it to move.

Plus, unless I have missed something, Rotring is not a big counterfeit item compared to MB, the Parker Sonnet etc.

Overstock.com were offering these at this price -- or at least a similar price. the one I bought has been a great writer, and looks genuine to me.

I picked up an Initial at Overstock.com as well, and compared it to a friend's pen. Definitely looks genuine, and is a nice pen for the (discounted) money.

Never seen any attempt to counterfit Rotrings, just close out pricing I would guess.

There are closeouts for the Initial line all over the web for right around that price. I have two of them and both are outstanding, reliable writers. You really can't go wrong at that price. Also, the matching RB, MP, and BP can usually be found for around $10 which is a steal if you want to complete the set.

Collection Counts: Cross-4, Esterbrook-15, Eversharp-1, Graf von Faber-Castell-1, Jinhao-2, Kaweco-1, Lamy-6, Levenger-2, Monteverde-1, Pilot/Namiki-3, Noodler's-1, Parker-18, Rotring-10, Sailor-1, Sheaffer-19, TWSBI-1, Visconti-4, Waterford-1, Waterman-7

Favorite Inks: Diamine, Levenger, Private Reserve, Noodler's Lexington Gray

I also grabbed one from Overstock a while back, seemed legitimate in terms of quality, fit, and finish.

I bought one of my Initials on eBay from M Lewertowski for £20 or thereabouts which works out at about $30. Very nice writer it is too!

Does anyone know what nib size they come with from Amazon? Don't see anything distinguishing that anywhere.

You can't go wrong with those Initial's, they are a great pen, I have a FP, and RB, I should look for the pencil as I love those old Rotrings, have several series One 600's. They are all practically bullet proof and I love heavy pens anyway. Good luck

Did you get a chance to try the new pen out? Also, did the one you order from Amazon turn out to be a medium or fine point.

So far, I've found the following listings for this discounted pen:

(1) Rotring Initial Silver Fine Point Fountain Pen; Model# 48678

http://www.overstock.com/Office-Supplies/Rotring-Initial-Silver-Fine-Point-Fountain-Pen/5141359/product.html

(2) Rotring Initial Silver Fountain Pen Fine Point; Model# 48678

http://www.amazon.com/Rotring-Initial-Silver-Fountain-Point/dp/B0002HT7B4/

(3) Rotring Initial Data Medium Point Black Ink Silver Fountain Pens; Model# 48006

http://www.overstock.com/Office-Supplies/Rotring-Initial-Data-Medium-Point-Black-Ink-Silver-Fountain-Pens/6155794/product.html

(4) Rotring Initial Silver Fountain Pen; Model# "Not listed"

http://www.amazon.com/Rotring-Initial-Silver-Fountain-Pen/dp/B004MTU9J2/ref=pd_sbs_op_1

(This is the same one "bObst" has listed in the opening post)

Note that the Model # and pen case for (1) and (2) are the same. However, item (3) has a different case. Item (4) does not have a model # or Nib size listed!

I am interested in a Medium point so am trying to figure out the right one. I've contacted the seller on Amazon about item (4) but haven't hear back. Item (3) is listed as a Medium but the case is different, does that point to a counterfeit?

I just received mine. $26.99 with free shipping on eBay from Pens_n_More. The nib say F, but it compares very closely with my Pilot VP medium nib.

Recently, I picked up a Pilot Metropolitan for $13, and now this Rotring. Both write just as nice as my more expensive pens!

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
