Favorite J. Herbin Ink?

Hello everyone,

I just got back from Paris which is like FP heaven. Such great pen shops, and great papeteries with shelf upon shelf of notebooks and inks.

I want to know what you all think the best J. Herbin ink is in terms of: 1) shading, 2) permanence (I don't think any are waterproof, but some are more permanent than others, I assume) and 3) unfinnickiness (if I can invent the word to mean an ink that can be used without problem in most pens and on most papers).

Thanks.

David

I love Poussiere de Lune and Bleu Myosotis - Lovely shading and well-behaved in each and every one of my pens.

Mine used to be Poussiere de Lune, prior to the formula change.... Now I'd have to say it's Vert Empire.

1670 is my favorite Herbin. I just love the rich velvety red with the gold shimmer!

Great ink. All that I've used shade really well. None have been finicky for me. I think the 1670 is the only one that's even a little high maintenance.

My favorites, not in any particular order, are Vert Empire, Poussière de Lune, Ambre de Birmanie, Café des Îles, Lie de Thé, Bleu Nuit and Violette Pensée.

I have bottles of Bleu Pervenche and Eclat de Saphir both of which I love. I've sampled Poussiere de Lune and like it but not enough to buy a full bottle. Hope that helps!

My favorites are Lie de The and Poussiere de Lune. I don't expect them to withstand a lot of water and I try to keep them out of the sun :)

Poussiere de Lune

I also like cafe, blue nuit and 1670

1670 for the win. Not a shader, but an oh so rich red ink. Personally, I like it when the gold flecks go in hiding. They tend to mute the liveliness of the color.

I agree with all of you on 1670; it is certainly the most beautiful of the reds I have used (MB Hitchock, MB Ink of Love, Pelikan Red, etc. etc.) but it is a relatively high-maintenance ink. Other than it, I have been very satisfied for a long time with Lie de The, and have just bought many of the others on my recent trip. I think tonight I will ink up my Midori Green Nakaya Dorsal Fin with Diabolo Mente or Ambre de Birmanie  ...

Two I use on a regular basis are Poussiere De Lune and my good old black standby Perle Noire. They just behave well and do as I expect.

Lie de The and Vert Empire for me. Perle Noire as well, but falls down on the shading :)

+1 for 1670 Rouge Hematite.

Another +1 here.

I don't think there is a Herbin ink I don't like. They are such nuanced, subtle inks. But I think Poussiere de Lune is my favourite, then Bleu Myosotis.

I've developed a real appreciation for old formula PDL and so it is my current favorite J Herbin ink. The 1670 Rouge Hematite Anniversary Edition ink is my second. When I run out of the old formula I will start looking at using their Eclat de Sapphir a bit more closely.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
