Hi,

This is my first post on this forum and I'm looking to There appear to be some US websites (World Lux and FPN) selling Montblancs and offer a discount. Is there a similar site in the UK?

I've bought many Writers Edition pens from ebay. My first choice is UK sellers (this is rare though) but I mainly focus on european sellers (Germany, Spain, France and Italy).

I'm lucky to have a convenient MB boutique close to me so I also buy from there.

Although I never have, the following are meant to be good:

Again, I've never purchased from there but they have a shops on the highstreet which sell MB:

I've always stayed clear of the US sites (such as the ones you mention) due to the import duty you'd have to pay on the purchase.

My Collection: Montblanc Writers Edition: Hemingway, Christie, Wilde, Voltaire, Dumas, Dostoevsky, Poe, Proust, Schiller, Dickens, Fitzgerald (set), Verne, Kafka, Cervantes, Woolf, Faulkner, Shaw, Mann, Twain, Collodi, Swift, Balzac, Defoe, Tolstoy, Shakespeare, Saint-Exupery, Homer & Kipling. Montblanc Einstein (3,000) FP. Montblanc Heritage 1912 Resin FP. Montblanc Starwalker Resin: FP/BP/MP. Montblanc Traveller FP.

Thanks.

Is there a problem with buying a new pen from ebay? I've read that if they are not authorised dealers then there is no warranty. Does that make any difference in reality? Also, how much is the import duty? The UK based websites such as Websters, Wheelers and the Pen Shop is that they are all full price.

Would you trust this seller on ebay?

Import duty for pens coming into the EU is 3.7% but there is a threshold under which it is not collected (I can't remember the figure; look it up on hmrc.gov.uk). You will also pay VAT at the current rate of 20%. Finally, the courier/handler (FedEx, ParcelForce etc) will charge an admin fee for clearing the item through customs on your behalf, typically £10-£12.

The pen needs to have a valid warrenty stamp from an authorised seller in order for it to have a valid warranty.

Having said the above... I did by a MB Dickens from ebay last year. The seller bought it himself from a MB boutique in London. Although the warrenty book was not stamped he provided a valid till receipt. This was enough for me to get the nib fixed FOC by MB when I took it in. NOTE: the original seller sold it within months of buying it so the pen was NOS.

The pens I buy are no longer available in a regular MB boutique, I therefore have to find alternative sources. A MB boutique would always be my first port of call but alas I take what I can.

As twdpens states, the cost for import including the VAT is high so you need a really good deal to make it worthwhile. In the pens I buy I've never found this to be the case.

There won't be a problem if you're really careful about who you buy from. Ask lots of questions, if necessary, to ensure that you are only considering a genuine item. There are plenty of listings with large and detailed images on them where you can see serial numbers and be fully aware that the pen is genuine. The lack of a warranty doesn't mean that you won't be given service from Montblanc in the UK. As long as it's genuine then you will. I'm not sure about changing nibs though, that might be tricky.

debsenterprises sells quite a lot of Montblanc pens, but they aren't cheap. It's sometimes a close call whether you might get the same model for almost the same price at a department store boutique on a 20% discount day.

I don't buy from the US because of the added expenses and delays. Note that VAT is charged on the full amount including the shipping cost.

You can look around on eBay UK and Europe though. There are plenty of bargains to be had.

London Heathrow Terminal 5 - £75 cheaper than buying it from Selfriges in Birmingham!

A number of years back someone I know got mugged and the robber took three Meisterstucks. as my friend was going on holiday soon after the event he bought replacements from the airport at a huge discount. It all well and good if you are planning a holiday, they might not have a full range opens for sale but they should have the more popular models.

Thanks Brandon. I've phoned them and they have the model in stock that I'm after. A friend of mine is flying out of Heathrow in a couple of weeks time and has offered to pick it up for me. It's still £40 more expensive than buying it from World Lux if I lived in America but a £75 discount will do me nicely.

I was gonna recommend the LHR duty free too having checked out the T3 boutique there recently. But as mentioned by others, base prices do differ worldwide. On my recent ravels I went armed with the basic UK pricelist and compared them with MB boutiques in Bangkok and Hong Kong. BKK was grossly overpriced, but HKG was significantly cheaper, almost to the extent of being cheaper than "so-called" duty free prices in UK. Exchange rates are factor in pricing, of course, so if you see a massive rise in the value of GBP, then plan a quick holiday to Hong Kong!!!

In the UK I have bought pens and other MB items from Wheelers - always excellent and helpful service, the stuff arrives when promised, always over-packed so it's perfect - I will continue to use them in the future.

I also buy regularly from the Bond Street MB boutique - again, excellent service, knowledgeable staff - I know you pay top prices and there are no discounts, but I believe service is worth paying for, and that when i need help or advice they will recognise me and give their best support.

I am just back from New York where I visited the Madison avenue MB boutique - indescribably poor attitude and standard of service - no comparison to London - I am surprised MB will tolerate such an attitude.

Another vote for Wheelers from me. Very fast service and very helpful when you call. Also you know that the items you are buying are genuine.

The lady at the Montblanc store told me Wheelers were the only authorised online retailer in the UK to sell Montblanc pens.

The lady at the Montblanc store told me Wheelers were the only authorised online retailer in the UK to sell Montblanc pens.

And occasionally they offer 20% discounts .....

I chose my user name years ago - I have no links to BBS pens (other than owning one!)

I have bought from the USA in the past but HMRC makes it virtually pointless if its a saving money venture.

Just looking at the last package received from the US and the charge list column reads :

Import Duty - £

Excise Duty - £

VAT - £

Other - £

Royal Mail Int Handling Fee - £

In large bold print it also states " THIS PACKAGE CANNOT BE DELIVERED UNTIL ALL THE CHARGES ARE PAID IN FULL "

I was told that all unpaid for packages are returned to sender after a certain timeline has elapsed. In laymans terms ' were stuffed '

A wise man once said    " the best revenge is wealth "   but a wiser man answered back    " the best revenge is happiness "

The true definition of madness - Doing the same thing everyday and expecting different results......
