Rohrer And Klingner Salix

The Good Captain

Recommended Posts

As mentioned in an earlier post - somewhere - I am uploading the scans I've done of Salix at intervals to try to show the subtle changes over a little bit of time. You'll have to bear with me. As usual, the scans were done within a few minutes of the ink drying and the paper is always (up to know) a Rhodia pad. These particular ones were all written with a Pelikan M200 and Medium nib, if anyone's interested. The date included in the written sample is the date it was put on paper.

First, the original Salix.

Next, the same piece scanned today.

Finally, a new Salix piece.

And for comparison, ESSRI: the first was done at the same time as the original Salix test.

And the same piece scanned today.

I don't plan to keep this up for too long - perhaps the next time should be the last: say three months?

Interesting, thanks ! From my experience Salix contains the least ig component, followed (in order) by Lamy Blue-Black, ESSRI, then Chesterfield Archival Vault (supposedly the same as Diamine Registrars Blue-Black, haven't tried it yet tho.) Same sequence is valid for color changing and maintenance. All inks shade nicely, all are dry-ish.

Do you still have these writing samples ?

I am curious to see how it looks a few months after it's been written. (how much it darkens)

Yes I do and I'll try to do some more scans in a couple of days. I've some photographs to frame for an exhibition which might take a little time tomorrow. Like; hours!!!!!

Thank you for your answer ! It's not urgent ! It's just to see how it ages (Some people said it remained quite blue and didn't darken a lot).

Anyway, I hope your exhibition will go well. Good luck for the framing !

I don't want to be annoying and I don't want to bother you too much, but it seems that you eventually didn't upload a recent scan.

Is it still possible for you to post one ? That being said, I can understand if you can't, of course !

Best regards,

Damn - I thought I'd got away with it!

No, seriously, it did slip my mind especially with the recent Diamine Blue-Black R2 reformulated bottle I got so I will scan tomorrow and post yesterday.

How's that for service?

That would be perfect !

That being said, I'm not in a hurry, I'm just curious to see how it ages over a long time, since it doesn't darken as fast as other IG inks.

Well, here are the scans, done a few minutes ago. They are the same pieces of 'writing' of course with the addition of one I noticed was on the same sheet written a little while later.

I have neither ink in a pen at present so can't add a current comparison but it wouldn't really be relevant anyway.

And the ESSRI one again, for comparison.

This particular sheet of paper has been in the 'dark' as it were since the last time - in other words, in a pile of sheets in the Rhodia pad I use for all my ink tests/comparisons - well out of the way of any direct light of any sort whatsoever.

Hope this is of use.

Thank you very much !

It seems that it progressively loses its blue component, and doesn't darken more...

Besides, it really looks much paler than ESSRI... I was curious to see this because I'm currently taking notes with Salix, and wondered which appearance it would eventually take.

To my eye Salix has lost a little blue.

I have to say that on paper and 'in your face', I prefer the Salix to the others I've got (admittedly just the ESSRI and Lamy) as I like the persistence of the blue colour over time. As some of you out there might have noticed, I don't like bl**k inks.

At all.

I do not have Salix but I do have Scabiosa and its color retention is why I use it instead of another iron galls. I've come to really like it. I had a bottle of Diamine Registrar's Ink until it lept out of the cupboard but I just couldn't love the black it oxidized to. I haven't replaced it. I may try Salix in the future but I'm really liking the deep, dark purple of Scabiosa.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
