Looking For A No Fuss, Soild Black School Ink.

Hi Simon,

Noodlers Black is a pain in the backside to get in the UK, best bet seems to be from www.pelikanpens.co.uk (no affiliation), but it's not cheap at £15 a bottle ($22.50).

It should be noted that the bottle is ~90ml.

Quite right but that still makes it about 2.5 x the price of the 4001 Brilliant Black. Approximately, before people bother to get out their calculators.

No arguement here. I was merely including information on the only ink in the listing that didn't state its shipping volume. I love Noodlers Black (not ALL Noodlers inks but certainly this one). However, I'm not so sure I'd buy it if it cost $22.50/bottle.

Actually, that's significantly cheaper than Iroshizuku (>$30 for 50ml). So, maybe I WOULD buy the Noodlers at $22.50. To me, it's THAT good.

Admittedly I've not tried the Pelikan, but Noodler's black is excellent ink. I know it's £15 a bottle, but it'll last a while. It was my ideal black until I tried Kiwa Guro.

Wow, Iroshizuku is really expensive over there. Here, the going price is just under $20usd per bottle, about the same price as Sailor's Kiwaguro.

Just thought about Herbin, The Writing Desk sell 100ml bottles which work out alot better than the 30ml.

It was on the UK ink prices post, but slipped my mind. Makes it significantly better value, though not quite as good as Pelikan.

Don't get me wrong, I like my Noodlers. I wouldn't be without my Sequoia and Zhivago, but for a school ink they are expensive and difficult to get a hold of in the UK.

He's in the UK. Why has noone suggested ESS or Diamine Registrars yet? (yeah, yeah it's writes blue, but it'll be black by the time the teacher marks the exam)

ESSRI does not turn a black ink as fast as that. In some cases, with various papers, the ink on my page is still a beautiful shading blue-black after three months. So I would not qualify it as a black ink. Others may disagree. It's a free country. (Well, it is where I live, anyway.)

As our Januaryman just mentioned, I think it's a good idea to include blue-blacks, too. But... I'd stay away from Diamine's Registrar's Ink unless you want a really dry ink.

Ahh so many choices!

Is this - http://www.thewritingdesk.co.uk/showproduct.php?brand=Pelikan&range=bottled+ink&cat=ink the Pelikan black everyone is on about? It seems pretty good price so i think i'll grab a bottle of this :)

I'm Also whilst in this Thread looking for another Black/Brown ink to use at Home in my Parker Sonnet, the pen is really scratchy/dry? When i use either of the Quinks i have now, so i think i might need a wetter ink?

Pelikan is underpriced at the art store near my house, so I can get it at $6.20 a 2oz bottle before my friend's employee discount

As for a nice wet flowing brown/black, I can heartily recommend Noodler's Walnut.

Assume no affiliation to recommendations.

Hi Simon,

That's the one, but it is cheaper elsewhere.

Your best bet will be ordering 2 of the bottles that are twice the size from here. (site is well trusted by the community.) going over the £10 mark means you will get free postage.

You could of course go for one, and treat your self to something else (denim highly recommended for a nice dark blue) to up the postage. No purchase enabling intended!

Otherwise, ordering one bottle there with £1.50 P+P would work out cheaper than the writing desk.

Ahh thank you! I think i will be ordering from them then! Will get a Bottle of Black and a Bottle Of Brown, Just to change it up a bit :)

Can you/anyone give any insight on how the Black writes compared to Quink? And How wet does the brown write? My Sonnet writes scratchy as heck, so need something wetter to write with it :)

Waterman Havana Brown is a well behaved brown ink, but I much prefer the deeper, rich tones of Diamine Chocolate Brown.

Sandy1 has provided excellent, detailed reviews on both:

2) Waterman Brown - https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php?/topic/68847-waterman-havana-brown/

If you have still not ordered, I would considering getting the Pelikan Brilliant Black and Waterman Havana Brown. The Pelikan Brilliant Brown is a bit of an acquired taste. It is more of an orange brown. I personally prefer Waterman Havana Brown which is also a slightly wetter ink. I love all the Pelikan inks (I have personally used the black, blue black, blue, violet/purple, green and brown) and the one color I did not warm up to is brown. It is well behaved but make sure you are happy with the color.

Another altenative is to get a bottle of the Pelikan Brilliant Black and Pelikan Royal Blue (or Waterman Florida Blue) which are great inks.

BTW Pelikan inks tend to run somewhat on the dry side but not objectionably so. They are very well behaved and reliable. Waterman inks tend to run wetter and are also very well behaved. The Waterman Black is however a less intense or deep a black as the Pelikan ink hence most people's recommendation of the Pelikan ink when you asked for black.

If you want a wet brown ink consider the Waterman Havana Brown, which seems to be an option from the same vendor you are considering.

Edit: Corrected spelling.

Thanks!

After looking at reviews and such, once i check my Bank Account, i'm going to be ordering a Bottle of Brilliant black and Havana Brown! :)

Does this forum have a Buy/Sell/Trade Section? I know on other forums i use, if you have stuff you don't like/want its always around to trade it with another member for something else? So i assume if the forum has one, if i don't get on with one of the Ink's i could trade it with something different with another member?

Simon

EDIT- Ordered! Can't wait to get them !

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
