Sailor Susutake Bamboo - final orders for models made by Mr. Noboyoshi Nagahara

Hi all,

I have just posted a classified ad for the final batch of Sailor Susutake Bamboo pens that will be made by Mr. Noboyoshi Nagahara this month before his retirement.

I thought I would put a post on here too since some of you may not have known of his retirement, or may have been saving up for one of his pens.

The advert is here: https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php?/classifieds/item/7412-sailor-susutake-bamboo/

If you would like to order one of these pens please pop me a message. Our deadline is the 8th March as there will be no more time for him to make them after this.

Best wishes,

Steven Jackson

Very nice looking pen but way beyond my means!

Out of curiosity, what makes them worth that amount of money? (Over USA $1900. :yikes: ) I understand that the material is rare, and the craftsman that will be making them is retiring, but are they also really special writers? ( Sorry for my ignorance.)

Hi Holly,

These pens come with the Nagahara nibs, which are extremely good (you can read about them here: http://www.sailorpen.co.uk/nagahara-story.html). However, the main value in these pens and many others are in their rarity and collectability rather than their functional or material value. For example, a Ming vase or a Rembrandt painting doesn't achieve its functional objectives any better than something that costs a fraction of the price, but in themselves they are inherently valuable because of their significance.

So in summary, they are very good writers, but the writing is not their sole purpose. They're really something for specialists and collectors rather than general pen users.

Best wishes,

Steven Jackson

This is absolutely, outrageously beautiful...

That metal plate on the section is just classy and the fact that it is made by the respected

nibmaster makes it all the more special! :notworthy1:

If the bamboo has been smoked for many decades from "Irori," I am curious if there is some faint smell of some food. They cook something in Irori and I am sure whatever is smoked with fume from Irori should smell something.

Thank you for your response, Steven. I do indeed like beauty for beauty's sake but as far as pens are concerned, I love them for their functionality as well. This is probably a pen that would never be used since inking it up would reduce its value. Very cool for those that can afford to buy something for their display case.

Anyway, the pen is very nice looking and I really like bamboo (I actually have some very hardy cultivars growing here in Colorado) but obviously I am not one of those that will be getting one. I hope all of Mr. Nagahara's Susutake Bamboo fountain pens find a good home with some very satisfied collectors. :)

saw one in the flesh at my favorite dealer mr mora today and it is a work of art

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

Mine has no scent that I can detect ... maybe apart from a bit of

Come on, Georges, I'm sure you can afford one! Profitez de l'instant présent! ;)

We went ahead and ordered a couple in - they've still not reached the UK yet but I'm looking forward to getting them when they do.

I figured that even if there is not the demand, I can always keep one for myself

Just wondering,....would the significant drop-off between the section & the barrel cause a problem in comfortably holding this pen?

I've seen other Sailor collector-grade pens (a recent porcelain one comes to mind) that have this feature.

Could they be comfortable daily writers?

All that said, I use Sailor's traditionally shaped pens & have a high regard for their nibs.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
