Sheaffer Skrip Kings Gold?

My school bookstore has 2 bottles (well, one now because I bought it) of Sheaffer Skrip Kings Gold ink for sale today at 30% off... so that makes them $3.50 a bottle. It's yellow-ish and i don't know if i like it, but I'll probably buy it because it's discontinued. Does anyone like this ink?

Edit: I see that there is a Sheaffer Gold (newer) and Kings Gold (older). How can i tell? The bottle has no color written anywhere on it. The sticker on the cap is yellow if thats how they mark them. The only reason I think it's kings gold is because thats how it rang up on the receipt.

I used some from a cartidge a few years ago. It has a nice gold color, but was too light to be practical for regular use. If you have a specific project or need for that color, OK, but one bottle is likely to last a long time.

I love the stuff and use it for grading papers. The new gold is really a bright lemon yellow. King's Gold is more subdued and has more amber tones.

I wish it was still available.

You can tell 'cause the King's Gold will be in the older (but not oldest) bottle w/ a ``Skripwell'' and is worth acquiring just for that reason.

That said, it's a nice colour, and I'm rather fond of it myself, though it tends to flow very freely and bleeds on a lot of the papers I use.

Apparently Private Reserve Shoreline Gold is quite close to it (in colour).

My bottle of King's Gold isn't marked, only the box is, and the cap is golden with the white dot.

I also have Shoreline Gold, which is comparable, but has more of a muddy-orange overtone. I like both colours. :)

Perhaps I got the new Gold... Which is still discontinued, if I remember correctly. The bottles are dated 2001. Oh well, for $3.50 a bottle, I had to buy out their last 2. If anything, I can use it for mixing or something. I just pulled apart an empty Pilot Varsity that I'm cleaning to load with this ink.

Heres the bottles.

Well... I did a sample of the ink. I'll have to post 2 pictures because in one, you can read the top better and in the other you can read the bottom.

Now, to be nice, I'll type out what it says....

Hello FPN!

Please excuse my sloppy handwriting if you can even read it with the color of this ink... This is Sheaffer Skrip Gold. I thought it was Kings Gold but I'm starting to think that it's just gold. It is an extremely light color. I'm having doubts of if I'll be able to photograph it.

The pen is a Pilot Varsity that was empty and I refilled. It was easier (to refill) than I thought it would be.

This ink could be used as a highlighter if I had a broader nib. I suspect that I will mostly just keep it in my collection for mixing. Maybe someday I'll write a letter in it to someone just to drive them crazy.

Oh no, 3 posts in a row by me... I just keep thinking of things to add. I'm actually quite proud that I was able to refill a varsity. Some write well. Some don't. Whats disappointing is that this one used to write well with the original ink and now its kinda scratchy. Anyways... Yeah I definitely think that I am going to be a severe inkaholic... I only have one pen right now and I have 2 bottles of the Skrip Gold, and a bottle of Watermans Florida Blue that should be arriving in the mail in a few days. And I've asked for Noodlers Aircorp Blue-Black and Red-Black for christmas (along with a Lamy Safari). Yep.

Hello everyone... My name is Ryan, and I'm addicted to fountain pens...

That is definately the new Sheaffer Gold, not the old King's Gold.

I also have PR Shoreline Gold, and though it is similar to King's Gold, in my opinion it is much brighter. I much prefer Kng's gold.

Hi Ryan and welcome to FPN! :D

Thanks for the writing sample. It looks like my Sheaffer Gold ink, too.

Oh, how did you refill your Varsity? I know some people did it via the nib end of the pen, whereas OldGriz came up with an idea for refilling from the barrel end. There are a couple of threads about this on FPN. Just curious how you did it....

I actually found the method on here. I gripped the base of the nib and the plastic part that goes up into the pen with pliers and just pulled it out and filled the pen with an eyedropper. The ink seems to be creeping past the seals. Now, this occurred with the original ink in the pen but it seems to be happening faster. This could either be because of the end being pulled out with the pliers, or it could be because of thinner ink. Oh well, I have 3 more varsities that still have their original ink in them that I will get to play with when they run out.

The problem I see with drilling out the top is that I don't think you could clean out the section above the nib very well just by rinsing. If you were using the same color, that wouldn't be a problem, but since i went from black to yellow, thats quite a difference!

Rather than removing the nib (which might cause damage to it), OldGriz tried filling the pen from the back end (he described it on page 2 of this thread: https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/in...?showtopic=7263 ) and it worked well.

Hi guitarman19853,

I just bought an old bottle of king’s gold, it looks very similar to the Skrip gold you wrote with. I’ve been looking at for years in the local stationary supply store, and finally decided to pick it up when I found out that Sheaffer’s ink had been re-formulated. The colour isn’t something I use for day to day writing, but I find it is very good for editing – especially for papers.

Still, despite my initial misgivings its been growing on me. Its too bad the the Skrip gold has also been discontinued.

Thanks for the review, especially the photos.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
