Do You "binge" Purchase?

Using the word "lending" very loosely, Geheim. Over the years, I've given away a drawer full of Esterbrooks and NOS Estie nibs, and another drawer full of calligraphy pens, one of which was a Pelikan I really should have kept. My recently acquired China cheapies probably will keep traveling also,(except for a couple of the higher-end ones that I think are pretty nice pens by any standard). As for land above Hilo, it's jungly and lovely, and a bargain, but only if the next eruption comes after you've gone to meet Buddha.

I'm a binger. It's just how I work, I'm always obsessive about new things. My list is quite similar to the one above, in a similar time frame:

I'm in the same boat. Got into the FP hobby about 2 months ago.

So far my list consist of:

Waterman Kultur Blue Demo (my first FP from a few years back)

Platinum Preppy(s) (not too much damage haha)

TWSBI 540 (made me love piston fillers, gf got it for me.)

Pelikan 120 MK model(sold it for a small profit)

Silver Deluxe (I think it's a no name piston filler, looks like a pelikan, but it has a leak)

Waterman 52 (sold it for a small profit to fund more acquistions)

Waterman 412 Silver Filagree (trying to find the right nib for this beauty)

Waterman 54 w/pencil set (Will probably sell this)

Montblanc 3-44 (sold it for a small profit)

Montblanc 344g Bordeaux model w/ Onoto super flex nib(for sale at the moment)

Montblanc 146, 80's model with a inkwell (sold both for a small profit)

Parker Vacumatic Major (for sale at the moment)

A few Pilot 78G's (was on a cheapy binge and the first one impressed me)

Jinhao 750 (also part of the cheapy binge from a few weeks ago)

Hero 753 (cheapy binge, I ruined the nib... now its trashed)

This is what I have in the mail on the way to me:

Montblanc 342

Montblanc 344

Waterman 52 1/2v BCHR Ringtop

Waterman 52 1/2v Ringtop (non chased version with gold trim)

Pelikan 400

Pelikan M100 (rare black version with silver trim)

Mabie Todd Blackbird

I'm sick... All this activity from just 2 months... It wouldn't be so bad if I was just buying entry level pens, but I wanted the nice stuff and bought some MB's/Pelikans/Vintage. I'm thinking about studying up on more brands too... If I ever go really deep in this with the limited edition pens costing four digits then it might be time to get some help. :roflmho:

P.S. Just did a count and that's almost a pen every other day. YIKES :yikes:

Well at least I plan to sell most of what is coming in. I just like trying new pens to find the perfect fit for me. Some of the pens I sold I wanted to keep like the 146, waterman 52, pelikan 120mk, but gotta keep the train rolling right?

You can say that again.

I grew up in Laie, I was there for that November day at waimea, backdoor and all the way down to pats a punalu. However, I have evan clark as my realtor and I got my plot earlier this year but wont build for a while. I have used evan for a while now, especially when we moved from laie, where i was born and raised, haole but again my father was a civil aviation pilot, at HNL.

I went to Kahauku HS, then left NS, to mainland for Univ, then to asia, I also lived in italy for many years, savona. Again,

UK is oke for now, but my plans are to go back home so I can be scattered on the 3 rocks break where I grew up surfing.

I have been in the soup more there then in waimea. I have snorkled at waimea in the summer and it was flat as glass.

Its jungly but better then some pahoa (bleep) hole house, with too many tongans. nothing against Tonga it is a lovely island nation.

LOL! I'm soooo glad that I'm not the only one who binges, I've been 'collecting' fountain pens for around 40 years, yes since I was a baby... When I started I would do a lay a way and my first good fountain pen was the Waterman Patrician, in green and an extra fine 18k nib... next purchase the ubiquitous Montblanc Meisterstuck 144 and a few others. I would have been fine until I found out about the Chinese/Asian pens... I used to only buy one of each model but lately I have decided that I needed a whole set of the same pens - different colours - to use at the same time and they would have all my favourite inks. I'm also finding that I need the larger pens as my arthritis gets a bit more bothersome. Over the last 3 months I have bought: (yes, I'm cringing with embarassment but you'll understand...)

19 bottles of the Iroshizuku inks ( LOVE EM LOVE EM LOVE EM)

6 Jinhao 650s with the pearl rectangles

6 Kaigelu 316s

4 Pilot 74s

4 Sailor 1911s, 3 black, 1 white

1 Sailor Maki-e the one with bunnies

4 Monteverde Invincia Black Tie Series

2 Laban Kaisers Ivory (supposed to be really big pens - in the mail to me :bunny01: )

3 Taccia Celestial Series - 150mm long and a joy to write with, 1 of each colour

6 Nemosynes, Ivory from xfountains

1 Omas 360 Magnum which is on it's way for repair

1 Omas Milord

2 Handmade fountain pen on it's way to me

1 Jinhao two dragons

6 Jinhao x450s, for giveaways

1 Ranga on its way to me

24 KNOX fountain pen nibs to replace the nibs in the cheaper Asian pens

and that's it, mind you I haven't bought anything fountain pennesh for a couple of years so this will keep me going for awhile!

cheers! Debbie

OOOMMMAAASSSSSSS. I'll have to wait for next years binge before I get my hands on a 360. At least I have something to look forward to.

I know the feeling, I been wanting one for years too! I'd love to get my hands on an ivory or white one - but not this year either it just isn't in my budget and Christmas is coming up too... cheers, Deb

My post-retirement acquisitions have been almost all cheapies, and I've been mostly delighted with them. But I just got a nice tax refund (I'm a perennial late filer), and so a couple restored Parkers are coming my way. My new everyday-carry combo will be a 51 for me and a same-color Hero 616 or 329 for backup and lending.

How could you do this to me? I just got a tax refund... and I *wasn't* going to spend it all on FPs. Honest!

Too many pens, too little time!

Over the last four months, my main purchases have been :

- S.T. Dupont Elysee

- S.T. Dupont Montparnasse XL guilloché "beehive"

- Oldwin Classic

- S.T. Dupont Dragon

- S.T. Dupont Samouraï

- S.T. Dupont Second Empire Prestige

- S.T. Dupont Olympio "Neptune"

- S.T. Dupont Classique "Art Deco"

- Waterman Edson Boucheron

- Waterman Sérénité

Thankfully, I have more or less finished my shortlist. I am pretty much done with the core of my collection now.

I still want to find a S.T. Dupont Classique "Révolution Française" but as it is beyond rare, and maybe a S.T. Dupont Apocalypse, but my wallet should have some rest for a while.

  • 2 months later...

I got my first Lamy safari in Dec 2012. In Jan 2013 I bought a retail montblanc 146. Then it became a montblanc starwalker doue, then a noodler ahab(which is too cheap to be a binge i suppose), and now I'm waiting for a super flex waterman from Mauricio at vintagepen.net. I might be sated for a while. I hope.

Fountain pens are like weapons. They just make your pocket bleed so much.

Does this count as binge?

They all came in the mail today.

This is the effect of the cold weather, Beijing smog, general winter depression. They create a something scary, called "taobao effect". It makes you find obscure very very cheap strange pens and buy them.

But to tell the truth, I will practice grinding a nib on most of these new pens.

My own personal Mr. Hyde is tightly clamped dow... when it comes out it usually does something epically stupid and expensive, although confined to a single item... if you consider that "binge" buying, then aye... Every 3 years or so the beast rears its head and chomps at my wallet.

  • 3 weeks later...

I try to limit myself to one pen a season because spending $2,000 on pens isn't healthy, but I more or less have no self control and got myself a Montblanc 149 M and Boheme Noir B. :cloud9:

The little things really count.

I can't afford to binge purchase pens though I did on one occasion with a bunch of cheap pens.

I'll admit I do binge purchase inks; quite frequently it seems

I'll go for weeks without a single purchase and pick up several (>5) bottles of ink when my budget allows for it.

I have no self control when i get curious. I now have a TWSBI 540 because I needed to see what all the fuss was about. I didn't really even want it . Now I have an Ahab on its way to me because I happened to see one at Amazon with a flex nib. I barely even remember ordering it, and I doubt I'll use it twice. I wouldn't order it today :roflmho:.

Won't happen with expensive pens, though. I have my limits. I think.
