Fine Nib Slim Fountain Pen Recommendation, <$100

I have small hands, and I've found that the Sheaffer Imperial IV is one of my most comfortable fountain pens. It's slender, light in the hand, and the nib performance is very smooth. It's also very easy to fill and clean.

Right now, Teri at Peyton Street Pens has a few NOS Imperial IV's in a beautiful green color with fine nib. The nib does not lay down as fine a line as the Sailor High Ace Neo. Nonetheless, it does lay down a fine line.

If she really, really likes the razor-fine line that the High Ace Neo lays down, then you might want to consider sticking with Japanese pens such as Pilot, Platinum, or Sailor.

Also, the fountain pen reviews forum on FPN has been an excellent resource. Most, but not all, will include photos and a writing sample. That information might be very helpful while you are trying to make a decision.

I think she might like a Pilot Cavalier. It's quite slim, sturdy metal (brass?) body, simple design, and a Pilot F nib is quite fine, indeed. I have a red one I got from JetPens and it's great for notetaking and shorthand. She might even prefer a Pilot M nib for more general writing, but I don't know if it's available with one from the factory. They're about $50, or more for one of the "duo-color" ones.

I second the cavalier, a great small pen that can be tucked away in a check book if necessary. It just so happens I have one - box papers and converter - to sell. PM if interested.

Consider the Sheaffer Snorkel:

It's reasonably thin, and it has the best (IMO) self-filling system ever designed.

They were made in the 1950's; Sheaffer made a lot of very smooth-writing F and XF nibs back then.

You have a nice variety of nib styles to choose from -- Pd/Ag, 14k, and 14k two-tone open nibs, and Pd/Ag or 14k two-tone "Triumph" conical nibs.

Mr. Binder has a nice reference page on the Snorkel pens. Link (Click "continue" to get past the T-Day message)

You should be able to find some nice, fully restored Snorkels within your budget.

They are often listed here in the Marketplace, and can also be found from some of the reputable sellers that frequent FPN.

Happy hunting, whatever pen you decide on. :)

You may already know this but just in case: Most nibs from the Orient will write a grade or so finer than Western nibs ..It is possible, even likely, that the Hi-Ace fine writes about like a Cross extra fine. If your friend likes finer nibs, try a Western EF, or stick with the pens from Pilot, Sailor, Platinum that are in your price range.

Best of luck with your selection.

Thank you all very much for your time, thoughts, and help. The present worked out perfectly -- happy holiday to everyone. She loved the Cross Century 1.

waterman laureat or waterman centurion, they can be found on epray at a good price

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
