Which Lamy Is The Highest Quality Version?

I recently got a Lamy Safari to try out as it is spoken so highly of on here. I was surprised how beautifully it writes and must say it is the best pen I've tried. I've been looking at reviews of other more expensive Lamy's but there is a lot of them. Which of them is the heartiest, highest quality version? I want a pen that can last my lifetime. Thanks in advance for your help!!

Yes, the Lamy 2000. Great pen.

Just make sure you don't mind the hooded nib. (Non-user removable.)

And yes, I know it's bourbon.

I prefer the Lamy Studio to the 2000. Feels nicer in my hand and I REALLY like the clip SOO much better. The edges on the 2000 got on my nerves. Plus it's easy and cheap to change nibs.

I am a big Lamy fan, and I would vote for the 2000.

The Studio is nice, but the lower price Studios use the same nibs as the Safari. Only the higher price Studios share the Lamy 2000's gold nib. The higher priced Accents also share the gold nib, but I've never seen one in person.

That said, the 2000 does have these tiny metal doodads sticking up to grab the cap that interfere with some people's grip. They don't bother me but you might want to check them out yourself.

Ooops. I was referring to the sharp edges on the clip. The little metal ears didn't bother me at all and I found the 2000 very comfortable to hold and use.

That's funny because I love the 2000's clip. :) I'm not a clip user, being a girl, so I'm just commenting on looks. Being a girl. :) The Studio's twisty clip is nice looking, too, but I really think the Lamy 2000 surpasses it. The whole pen has a great overall design. It belongs in a museum. :)

The 2K is a wonderful pen, and a piston filler; I found that what is said about its tendency to develop sponaneous cracks is true. I never add that kind of trouble with the Studio. The 14k gold nib on the limited seasonal editions is a charm; of course, it is a different beast, heavier, most of them with a steel grip, and converter/cartridges filler (and the Lamy converter is not flawless IMHO. I never actually tried the pen, but I wold be curious to know about the Lamy Accent, esp. with the 14k gold nib.

PS: the gold nib on the Accent and the Studio (and the D3) is not the 2K's nib.

I have the Safari, Studio, Joy,and Al-Star. I think all 3 are great BUT if I was only allowed one for life, it would be..........the Safari! I have had the mysterious ring problem with my Studio (it falls into the cap and makes it impossible to close), the Al-Star needs to be fiddled with to make it write successfully (come to think of it, the Studio does too). The tail on the Joy is too long and silly. The Safari writes every time I pick it up, feels almost soft in my hand and lets me write for hours with no problems. Just the ones I got. I must say that the Lamy is a Great Pen, though.

Have the Safari, Al-Star, Studio and 2000 and think they are all great pens. The 2000 really is an exceptional pen in my mind.

If you love the Safari so much, consider the Al-Star. The metal body adds a little more girth and weight which you may like. IMHO, it gives the Safari's design a nice upgraded feel. That includes the smoke/transparent colored section which aids in monitoring your ink level at the bottom of the converter.

Beyond that, I'd consider a Studio. Same swappable nibs as used on the Safari and Al-Star which really expands your pen's potential. Again, a little more weight than the Safari and Al-Star. The cheaper stainless steel Studio has a textured plastic section which is comfortable to grip; other Studio colors have a shiny metallic section which can be slippery.

I've read about too many problems with the 2000 to try one. As I grip most of my pens above the section and post, the "ears" on the 2000 scared me away. I also don't care for hooded nibs.

If slim pens are to your liking and it fits your budget, I'm going to suggest the cp1 platinum version. The cp1is absolutely classic Lamy design (besides the 2000 of course). The pt version comes with a gold nib instead of steel. I think this pen might fit the lifetime requirement.

I have the Safari, Al Star and 2000. All wonder fountain pens. I have thought of the Studio (one with Gold Nib), but it just didn't appeal to me enough.

The 2000 for me is a wonderful pen, I own the FP, BP, Trio BP and MP.

i have a Studio (steel nib), Safari, Joy and 2000. Of the bunch the 2000 stands out, it's fantastically designed and built.

I have a studio palladium with a fine gold nib, perfect weight, balance and beautiful looking/writing nib, for me, and certainly one of my favourite non vintage pens.

I think you get what you've paid for. Although I've only held Lamy's owned by others I think you can tell the quality increases with the higher prices. If this was not the case then they would not be priced as they are.

In a way, what you are asking is kind of like falling in love with a Chevy and asking which Chevy is most like a Lexus. Lamy is a value-for-your-money pen manufacturer, not a your-pen-for-a-lifetime manufacturer. (Not that a Safari wouldn't last you for a lifetime--you might not want it to.) I won't advise against a 2000 (since I don't have one) but I would suggest that you explore the world of mid-range pens for a while before you spend that much money on one. There are many excellent pens out there in many different shapes, colors, materials, and sizes. Even in the under-$200 category you can find hand-made pens from wonderful materials, beautifully-finished traditional pens, and pens that click open and closed like a ballpoint. All of these can be wonderful writers, made of fine materials, and good enough to last a lifetime. Perhaps you would like to explore a little more before focusing on one brand.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
