Alfred Hitchcock Pen

These photos are not at all what I was prepared for. Some time ago, a rather poor image was posted in this forum of a handsome cigar-shaped Hitchcock pen. But this sure isn't it. In any event, my wallet is spared.

I'll turn my attention towards one of those platinum-plated sterling cigar-shaped pens with the fine engraved MB star over the cap and barrel. That's more my idea of a good looking contemporary Montblanc (if I could just remove the plating!).

Fred and I are in sync on this one. After looking at some of the initial images I really thought I was going to want to get this. I was agonizing a bit over it lately because it's not really so great for my long term budget plans. But after seeing these photos, well, I'm underwhelmed. Kinda neat, but definitely not neat enough for that price. My wallet is spared as well. Whew!

(Nothing against anyone who really likes it, of course - just doesn't light my fire. I'm going to go play with my new-to-me Wahl Coronet some more now... :cloud9: )

Many thanks for sharing those pictures!

The laquer effects are absolutely beautiful; especially on the red one ... but I don't like the rest of it that much

Cheers

This pen reminds me of the A380 special MB made a couple of years ago.

Big, full of steel and ugly (the A380 pen).

I like the swirling pattern and the nib imprints but the other features are not my cup of tea. My wallet is spared too

Best regards, Kai

Er no. Doesnt strike me as one of their best efforts in my opinion. Looks like a drunken Visconti has bred with a Fat Boy rollerball.

At the Ohio Pen Show, I was given a free copy of iW - International Watch magazine incorporating Stylus magazine, by the editor of Stylus. It was covering all the new watch and some pen designs, and I can tell you, in my humble opinion the only purpose of each watch was to out-do the next. I mean, these things are marvels of micro-mechanics and design, yet each are hideous, garish and over-the-top in their own right. Many could be worn by the Transformers (ask your kids) in their movies, and fit right in. It is harder to be so outrageous with pens, given the comparative few moving parts, but I believe that is the same market Montblanc is going after with pens like the Hitchcock.

The Hitchcock was never intended to fit into a fountain pen collector's pocket or merge with a collection of historic pens. It's not an investment. It is a high-profit outrageous pen that screams for attention, and gets it. If they're anything like the watches, I think we will see more of these designs, not less. But so long as Montblanc continues their more subtle design improvements to their core range of pens, I don't care how ridiculous and gaudy the top-end designs become. I can always have fun looking, can't I?

Besides, Alfred Hitchcock might have approved of a pen that looks like it could have been one of Norman Bates' taxidermy tools. Or worse.

For me, a metal section is an instant no-sale, as I hate trying to grip metal with my fingertips while writing.

A pen-shop salesperson showing the pen to me called Montblanc's design "dark." She was not referring to the color of the lacquer.

It has several elements that I dislike in pens, but I can't explain why I'm attracted to its stocky proportions and gimmicky clip. Maybe I'm just becoming attracted to the literal, rather than what I used to like, which is more abstractly metaphoric or symbolic. This pen is OK in my book. Gotta see it in person though.

There is still "stainless steel" stamped on the clip. The pen express dark side and tension successfully. The design is unique. I am considering to exchange nib or not. Should I have pens all with B nibs?

Wait, the production pens still say "stainless steel"? I assumed that was just something for the preview pens. Not cool, MB, not cool.

It might have been nice to see a motif somewhere along 'The Birds,' but the black waves are kind of fun.

The proportions just look 'off' to me, though. And so do the shiny parts.

I think it'a stunning. I like the vertigo effect, the rivet effect on the clip and metal thing going on. Think it's really a beautiful. Of course I like the IWC steel thing and Panerai. So maybe that's the root of it, but I also like all the subtle little touches to celebrate AH's work. I think MB hit it right on this one.
