Ring Binder Mechanism

hello, everyone.

 

does any one know where to buy these -3, 6 or 7- ring binder mechanism on the web? i've found a couple of places on the net, but one needs to order over 1000 of them... i don't need that many

 

they can be for any size, but preferibly for A5 paper (8x5).

I looked for ring binder mechanisms too a while ago. I don't remember seeing any singles for sale. (I do remember being able to buy 50-100 instead of 1000 though) I eventually changed what I was going to do anyway, but my conclusion was that the easiest thing was to buy the cheapest paperboard binder at OfficeMax/Depot/Staples with the mechanism you want and remove it. In most cases it is fairly poorly riveted in. If you spring for a slightly more expensive one, they're sometimes held in place by small allen (hex) screws. From what I remember of the prices for 100 mechanisms (and iclude a big discount for bulk) the majority of the expense for the binders you find at OfficeMax is the mechanism anyway (unless it's obviously more rubust than just some cardboard or thin plastic).

 

Edit : Ooops - just realised you wanted A5. Well in general these 3 ring binders are for Letter,(i.e. the slightly different sized US equivalent of A4) or half-Letter, often called "Classic", because that is what the size of "Dayrunner" planners is.

 

Again I would pilfer one from another binder.

Less of a selection at office stores in the US, Not sure where you are ... but there is a fairly good selection online.

 

I remember finding a good company, that was obviously oriented to selling to corporate offices, but that would sell to individuals on the web, very rudimentary website, but it looked like they had cheap A5(ish) sized binders in 3, 6 and 7 ring sizes. If you really need me to I might be able to find it again (PM if necessary).

I found a Canadian store selling them individually, with rings from 1"-2" in diameter. It doesn't list what the spacing between the clips is, but I'd guess it's US letter sized:

If you're talking about real A5, how many holes do the Europeans use, two? I know A4 paper is usually 4 holes, for 4 hole binders and also 2 hole ones for filing, easier flipping through. Filofax goes around using 6 rings, probably to keep the groups of 3 the same as on smaller sizes, but nobody else uses paper like that.

 

For half US letter, it's 3 holes.

Why not buy a Filofax anyway? I 'needed' (don't we all) an A5 one and ended up with a couple at very low prices from ebay - the nicest is a lovely tan Italian leather, the Belmont, well made and full of useful pages. OK I sound like an advert, but I have no connection with the FF guys other than being a customer.

thx for the suggestion, but i own a couple of filofax's.

 

i guess i didn't explain in the O-Post what i intended to do with them. i do want to be able to make my own notebook/organizer. possibly make my own covers for these -no idea how to go about it, but i wanted to find out if these clips were available first.

 

... and/or switch the clips from one organizer to another.

In the States, DayTimer and Franklin Day Planner products have a 7-hole system for their mid-sized systems.

With the waning popularity of paper-based calandars and planners, I see old notebook binders on the shelves at thrift stores, usually in the school or office supply sections. Easy to remove the mechs from the older ones becasue they were assembled into the cover with hex head bolts. Newer, cheaper, crappier binders use rivets requring careful drilling to separate the components.

 

Here's another thought, buy inexpensive vinyl binders. They can be had cheap. Create a leather cover that might slip over the binder. Might be a good way to experiment on your technique before investing in more complicated but more creative leathercrafts.

I looked at a couple of notebooks that are taking up space here. It seems like it would take less than a minute to drill out the rivets and scavenge the binder mechanism from the notebooks. A rivet or a Chicago screw would be needed to attach it to the new cover.
