Removing Dried Ink In A Inkwell

hello all,

 

I received an old glass inkwell with much died ink. Looks like someone left ink to dry out. After storage for a number of years now I got it and need to remove that ink. Any tricks or recommendations to clean it? I tried leaving it for days with clean water and also water plus ammonia but the removal was minimal and not really effective.

Will some of the ink wipe out with a paper towel?

If you are only dealing with the glass portion (i.e. - not the stopper material, etc.) you could try a dilute bleach solution. Just make sure you rinse it thoroughly when done and then rinse it again for good measure.

Ahh! I have been thinking on buying some of those for a while, it would be handy just now.

Technical pen cleaner.... it will remove just about any old dried ink including india ink....

If it's only the glass portion, you can use some pretty potent cleaning agents which you might already have readily at hand, such as lacquer thinner, rubbing alcohol including the strong 99% version, paint remover etc. Just be sure to wash & rinse thoroughly afterwards.

 

EDIT - just don't use a caustic paint remover, these may contain sodium hydroxide which can damage glass!
