Which One Do I Have ?

Hello, MontBlanc folks !

I am the only FP collector in the family, mostly Parker pens.

My cousins sent me Aunt Katie's Montblanc pen and pencil set, with the

understanding that I will take good care of it. I intend to care for

it and its memories.

The fountain pen is 5 5/16 inches long, capped, and 5 7/8 inches long,

cap posted. The cap diameter at the cap band is 1/2 inch, and bears

the six-pointed white star at the end. It has a gold clip, and the

clip band reads " W Germany ". The pen is black plastic. A piston

filler is installed. The set shows little use, and/or excellent care.

There is a wide, gold, cap band, flanked by two narrow, gold, bands.

Engraved on the wide band, in upper case block letters is

" MONTBLANC-MEISTERSTUCK ". I did not detect an umlout. (?)

The nib appears to be fine or extra fine. It is engraved with

" 14K " and the number " 4810 ".

The matching pencil feeds very fine lead, in small increments, by

repeated 1/8 turns of the cap.

Which model did Aunt Katie leave to me ?

Thank you for all the help to come.

Possibly a 146. Tell us about the ink window? Check again for the umlat. Check the nib and see if it says 14C instead of 14K. Is the nib all one color? Are you sure it is only 5 5/16" long capped?

Thanks so much for your help. My old eyes are getting a workout

The full length of the capped pen might be 5-3/8 inches, instead of 5-5/16 .

There is a fine space in the two arms of the letter " U ". This results in

a shortened letter, with an umlat. (Thanks for making me look again.)

The nib is full yellow. The inscription is definitely " 14K ". At the

bottom of the nib, and partly obscured in the section, is the top of

the nunmber " 5 " twice. Between the two 5's is a mark that I cannot

decifer (I see only half of it.).

There is no " ink window " in the body. Unscrewing the body of the pen exposes

the filler. It is a clear plastic piston with chrome fittings, stamped Montblanc,

W. Germany. I am 90% certain that it is a cartridge converter, but I won't be

pulling on it, until I am 100% sure.

My cousin says that they bought it for their Mom in the early 1990's , from Fahrney's.

Again, many thanks.

Sounds like a 144 if it has a converter inside. Does the cap pull off?

It is a 144. I have several of them in different nib sizes. I think you will enjoy it. They are my main pens, with a few others.

Edit to add: It is a c/c pen. The converters seem to last about ten years before they start to not pull in a full load of ink. They cost about $11 currently for a new one, however, the older push-on converters are hard to find, and I have had trouble getting the newer screw-on converters to fit. There are other makes of converter that will fit, and I think Bexley might be cheapest.

Okay, sounds like a 144 and if bought in the 90s from Fahrney's the only other likely options would be a Generation or one of Noblese/SL/Slimline models.

The nib likely has 585 on it which is the same as 14K.

When I first posed the question, I took a coupld or photos to post.

I do it routine with email. I guess I don't know how to do it here.

Sorry.

The pen cap pulls off. It pulls off too easily for my liking. I wouldn't

trust it in shirt pocket.

Go to Google images and search for "Montblanc 144" "Montblanc Slimline" and tell us which looks more like your pen.

The third one from the left has the same proportions as my Mont Blanc.

All others are too "chunky". And my cap PULLS off. It does not screw off.

Let's see if this gets me Aunt K's Montblanc set.

Hey, are Parker collectors smart, or what ?

Yup, 144. The others from left to right are 149, 146, the 144 (now the property of a wondrous young lady who illustrated this children's story), 12, 121, 342 and a 264.

Sasha you have a lovely set there - hopefully with happy memories as well - I'm sure you will have plenty of years of pleasure using it.

I bought a Mozart set (FP and BP - the miniature version of yours) from ebay and it saddened me when I found out the set belonged to the persons grandmother and they were selling it off to gain some money. I hope the old lady knows I appreciate using her pens!

So enjoy your family heirlooms!

Thank you. I will. I am the only openly pen-ophile person in our family.

They know that I will take good care of the fountain pens. I think

they like that I will keep the heirlooms in service. I have six inherited

pens, including a 1927 Parker from a friend of 42 years. It belonged to

her father.

I think that family will appreciate that you will be keeping grandmother's

Mozart set healthy and useful, and that it won't be neglected in a corner,

to be thrown away someday. In your hands, the set will live one more

generation.

I own a desk set from the estate of a retired general. His family knows that

I am a collector who will honor and maintain the set.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
