The Best Leather Single-Pen Case?

WriterJP

Recommended Posts

Hello All!

I am in the market for a leather single-pen case. Black is very much preferred over brown, as the pen (A Montblanc Meisterstueck 146 Legrand FP) is black bodied. A zippered enclosure is preferred, although I'd be willing to look at those with a flap closure as well. I am skeptical about the protection of the single pen "slips", like those offered by Aston, etc. The biggest elements of concern to me are protection of the pen, and to make sure the pen will actually fit in the case!

Any and all ideas are welcome! Thanks in advance!

Regards,

JP

I have been a happy user of a Pelikan single fountain pen case, in black.

This high quality soft leather case expands (by a bellows-like construction) to accommodate the largest of the Pelikan pens.

The case's padded front, back & flap provide excellent protection for your pen.

I've now ordered a two-pen case in black, with a green accent.

These Pelikan cases can be found on the "nibs.com" web site.

(I've no affiliation with the above business, other than being a repeat satisfied customer.)

Cheers: tinta

+1 on the Pelikan cases. I have a three pen case. They hold M1000 and 149 size pens and are very well made from nice materials. Colors are all black or black with a green accent (which is the strap under which the flap tucks). I am considering a single pen case for when I don't need to carry three pens. I got mine during a sale at Farhney's Pens...no affiliation.

The flap is quite long and would not easily just " come out" when you are carring it.

I really love the Montblanc zip case. Its on the pricier side, but definitely worth it.

Hello to All,

I have good success with some straight razor pouches that are hand-made in leather by Mr Neil Miller in the UK.

Whilst not designed with pens in mind, they do a good job :)

Have fun !

Best regards

I agree about the Pelikan cases. I've got Conway Stewarts in two of mine and there's no chance of them accidentally falling out.

Re: the Pelikan flap-closure leather cases...

The front & rear panels of these cases are wider than most FPs, & offer great side protection. (Multi-pen cases have partitions.)

I also like the understated elegance of the Pelikan case design. The brand logo is a simple embossing. Nothing flashy or "in-your-face".

Look at Tatol at http://www.tatol.co.uk/. I have a lovely burgundy leather zip case by them, with holders for two pens.A pleasure to use. (No affiliation!)

Edit... I notice that the model I have is not currently listed, but there are two nice current models, one a zip bag, the other a cigar-case style

I have a few of these, they're secure and will hold most fat pens, an Aston Flap over hard case. Swisher pens has them. (no affiliation but always had great personalized service)

I have the two pens holder and is working perfectly. It is also very beautiful. Two colours are available.

"Agenda Moderne" of Paris also makes some fine leather (front flap) cases for single FPs. I've bought an olive Morocco-leather one from Laywine's in Toronto. The case is not padded (like the Pelikans) but provides good protection on the sides.

I have a MB single-pen flap-over case which is lovely and a single cigar case which was a fraction of the price. Both have held my MB at different times.

I just bought a single pen MB black case (flap style). It's waiting to hold my Thomas Mann if it would ever get here! I do have a four pen case I bought years ago from Levenger and it has held up very well, just gets softer and nicer. Call me a snob, but I can't bear to put my pens in case with a zipper. :yikes:

I've always felt that a single-cigar slider case could be converted into a gorgeous pen case. Many of them come with cedar-lining, but I bet that could be taken out or at least padded with some soft material or flocked to protect the pen. Something like this would be really nice:

Along the cigar tube vein,....I found one of my "Ci-Guard" brand, black, hard plastic tubular cigar-cases that I used ten years ago, when I still smoked fine Nicaraguan natural Maduros, by Padron.

Open heart surgery & some common sense stopped the cigar smoking, but my tubes are still around.

With padding, a fountain pen could easily fit inside & most likely a truck could run over it without significant damage.

Maybe, not quite!

My 1911-M Mozaique is a bit longer and wider than the regular 1911 Mid-Size. This pen fits with room to spare.

Probably a regular size 1911 or other similar sized pens would also fit.

And, if not for daily use, these Ci-Guards would work well to ship pens.

Thanks "Trinity", you gave me a great idea.

Will the miller x3 wrap accommodate 3 Pelikan 800's? They seem good value to the bespoke cases whic I think are way overpriced. The Miller pouches look the business.

The Pelikan cases are excellent and can accommodate a variety of differently sized pens. I normally have one in my briefcase as the second set, using it to keep spare ink, an extra FP and a Pelikan M200 highlighter FP on business trips, although I used to carry one for my primary set as well.

Nowadays for my primary writers, it can vary. Most of the time it is a CS 3 pen hardcase (with a Nakaya Writer, an M800 IM and either a Sapporo or a second M800 IB). If I take my MB149 out, it lives in an MB slip case with a BP and 0.9 Pencil. Either of those cases I can recommend, and most exist as 1, 2 or 3 pen versions. The CS case is a bit big and is probably best kept in a briefcase or an inner overcoat pocket. OTOH, it has space for a couple of creditcards and business cards, as well as a slip space for receipts, which is useful and avoids carrying a separate walled during meeting days, etc. :)

I have one Danitrio Mikado which is humungous! I carry that in a cigar case like the one TrinityTam uses. I've not modified it, but I wrap the pen in a microfibre cloth before it goes in the case. It does raise a few eyebrows when I pull it out :happyberet:

Lamy's single and double cases are nice as well.

I have a Montblanc "slip" case which I think they call a pen sleeve. I know you are skeptical but they are really quite safe. I don't have any pens as fat as a 146 and none of them have fallen out. Pens fit quite snug and tight in the case. I image the 146 would be especially secure due to its large girth.

I usually carry around a Parker 51, 21, Sonnet, Vac Jr, MB 144 or Sheaffer Snorkel and they all fit well in it.

It's a quality made case. Black full grain calf leather, lined and made in Germany. It usually goes in my front pants or jacket pocket and it's very compact.

Parker: Sonnet Flighter, Rialto Red Metallic Laque, IM Chiseled Gunmetal, Latitude Stainless, 45 Black, Duovac Blue Pearl Striped, 51 Standard Black, Vac Jr. Black, 51 Aero Black, 51 Vac Blue Cedar, Duofold Jr. Lapis, 51 Aero Demi Black, 51 Aero Demi Teal, 51 Aero Navy Gray, Duofold Pastel Moire Violet, Vac Major Golden Brown, Vac Deb. Emerald, 51 Vac Dove Gray, Vac Major Azure, Vac Jr. Silver Pearl, 51 Vac Black GF Cap, 51 Forest Green GF cap, Vac Jr. Silver Pearl, Duovac Senior Green & Gold, Duovac Deb. Black, Challenger Black, 51 Aero Midnight, Vac. Emerald Jr., Challenger Gray Pearl, 51 Vac Black, Duofold Int. Black, Duofold Jr. Red.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
