Sepia Inks - Multi Ink Review

dcpritch

Recommended Posts

I never thought of Sepia as a 'red' ink or a high maintenance one...but depends on who makes it to how saturated it is.

Herbin would be less saturated.

I had it in my head eventually to do 15 nibs, 15 inks and 15 different manufactures papers. I'll probably only end up with types some from the same manufacture.

I do want to have an idea what paper will do to a nib and ink combo.

I've been talking about this for a while.

It don't look like I'll be able to do the best of the papers as once planned.

How ever I do have enough papers to not to need to use the worst papers.

I'll be doing ESSR and 17 pens and 50 papers. 1/3 of the papers are only two sheets. 1/3 are not quite as good as I hoped with I grabbed anything that looked like fountain pen paper.

And it only took two years from the time I had the :eureka: to I get around to doing it.

But I'm only writing the Name of the Pen and width and two Let it Be's. one light and one harder,

L et i t B e

The more flexible nibs get a few fancy letters.

Do they tend to clog more readily?

Are the sepia colours generally higher maintenance inks?

I haven't had any clogging problems, but then none of the inks have been in my pens for longer than a couple of days due to the nature of this comparison test. Cleaning is another matter. I found the Noodler's Seminole Sepia and Grizzly to leave a very fine film on the underside of the nibs that needed to be wiped off during the cleaning process. With those two exceptions (and the issue was very minor), the other inks in the comparison have been very well behaved, and I am already planning a couple of acquisitions.

L et i t B e

L and S are my fancy letters, and the capital B gives me a fancy letter along with the swing of the e for shading.

I don't know it it was the Beatles, I was not a fan of theirs. Could be some of their stuff stuck in your head, like Lucy in the sky with diamonds. :happyberet:

I went from hating Elvis (he ruined a movie I went to when I was seven/eight in @ '56...no one wiggled their hips in the civil war)... to liking him when the Beatles came in; he could at least sing.

.... I went from Beach Boys to Stones to Dead (Jerry Garcia was an incredibly talented man.) to Tull...stayed a Tull fan.

I know when my wedding anniversary is, they had a Tull concert that day...and I missed it. :crybaby:

I just ordered MB Sepia from Buy now, for €16.95 and no postage. So it only costs '1/3' more than it would have had I bought it back in the when.

I now have 1 and 1/2 bottles of MB Sepia Ink. I should be good for the decade.

I've been on a ink splurge this last two weeks.

I'm done for the year.

Montblanc Toffee Brown - is this the right MB ink, or is it really a brown?

Before MB sold Toffee Brown, they sold MB Sepia.

I'm not trying to contradict Lloyd, I'm just saying that that is no helpful tip.... (No harm meant.)

... Before MB sold Irish Green, they sold Racing Green....

... Ditto Lavender versus Violet....

... Ditto Burgundy versus Bordeaux.... none of these newbies is a reincarnation of the oldie. I.e. Toffee brown is by no means a Sepia, and it wasn't intended to be a replacement, either.

Lavender versus Violet....I heard they were the same...so I didn't buy any on Ebay...when I can get it cheaper in the B&M.

I don't know not having either.

I'm slowly getting smart in my old age; buying discontinued inks...like I should have done with Racing Green.

Just for the heck of it...

The colours on my monitior are as close to the real McCoy as I could imagine.

To my eyes, Violet is darker and at the same time redder than Lavender.

Thanks Mike,

As soon as the Easter bunny brings the goose that lays golden eggs, I'll be getting some of the Old Violet.

Though my Sepia is a different tone than yours. I don't do swabs. :headsmack:

No, it's Ian Anderson on the flute. The band pulled the name out of a book, he'd invented so agricultural machinery in the 19th century. Great, now I have Jack in the Green in my head. Well, it could be worse.

Well, I guess I've been bamboozled all these years re Tull. Thanks for the clarification.

I was just pointing out the existence of a recently discontinued "Sepia" to test. I didn't think Lavender, Violet, Racing Green, Irish Green, etc. should be tested but an ink labelled "Sepia" might be an ink the OP might have been interested in.

Was, and is, interested. I got a sample of MB Sepia and it's in the review. Only six inks left to do.

Just saw this was done. This is the ultimate review I have seen to date.

With the new FPN rules, now I REALLY don't know what to put in my signature.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
