Hello,

 

I recently relocated roughly 2,300 miles and am still trying to find my way around my new town. Is anyone out there from the Indianapolis area and able to recommend a decent stationery or pen shop? I'd also be open to recommendations of shops in Cincinnati or Chicago as I plan to travel to both of those cities very soon. Thanks for the assistance!

Hardwicke's also has a shop on the circle downtown, though the Broad Ripple store has a much better selection.

Spending the day in Zionsville is one of my favorite things to. Avalon is great fun to visit. There is a cat wondering around and the proprietor is just wonderful to chat with.

So ... then ... what about Chicago? The only stationery store I've found there (Watertower) was pretty pedestrian, although they did have a few unusual pens.

What if the Hokey Pokey really is what it's all about?

@pkoko: Is Paradise Pen INSIDE Keystone at the Crossing (I guess that's officially The Fashion Mall now)? I'm a Broadripple native and haven't set foot inside the mall in years and don't recall seeing it in my travels around that area. Granted, my travels in that area are fairly limited and infrequent - most of what I need I can get here in the 'Ripple.

I also recommend Avalon Pens in Zionsville. Great customer service.

In Chicago, Century Pens in the loop is fantastic. The owner, Ed Hamilton, is a class act, to say the least, and demonstrates daily that customer service is truly not dead.

Since you mentioned Cincinnati, I'll throw in Louisville, KY which is a straight shot down I65 from Indy. Edgar's is on the campus of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. I've not been there, but hope to go soon. Here are two links referencing it:

As noted, Paradise Pens in the Fashion Mall closed on or about July 1, 2011. Hardwicke's and Avalon are great choices. Avalon is especially good for conversation about, well, anything!

 

Would also second the Century Pens recommendation; please note, though, that they are only open Monday through Friday if I recall correctly.

 

Haven't been to Appointments in Cincinnati in some years, but I recall it being a nice store and a very helpful staff.

 

Finally, mark your calendar for the Ohio Pen Show the first weekend in November. Columbus is just 3 hours away!

Sadly Paradise Pen has been removed from the Keystone Fashion mall! Closest one is not Ohio?! Makes the fashion mall just, well... less fashionable!!

Yes they are gone. They were close to teavana and next to papyrus, near lovesac (giggle). I can't believe they closed!!!

I believe there are some over in Columbus Ohio area but I don't know about Cincinnati. BF Gould.. any relationship to the Indianapolis solenoid company?

I just found this thread and seeing the "Stationers" name sure brought back some good memories.

 

As many have pointed out Pen Paradise is closed. Avalon is a must visit for anyone in the area. As StyloBug33 mentioned a day in town is very enjoyable. Be sure to lunch at the Friendly Tavern, which is across the street from Avalon. Don't come to town on Sunday as the streets roll up on Saturday early until Monday.


Quality pen restorations and nib grinding. Diamine Inks, Aston Leather cases, Rhodia & Clairefontane paper, Vintage Pens, Bexley, Edison, Gate City. Pelikan, & Pilot Pens.

Oh! I absolutely love Bear (The 11yr old black cat). I love downtown Zionsville. Great day walking the streets and mom & pop not big box stores!

      Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

      It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

      Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

      @asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
