How To Open An Ink Bottle

Edyzza

Recommended Posts

Okay, just recently, my sister's boyfriend gave me a fountain pen set with two ink bottles. The bottles are both made of glass and the top is surrounded by some plastic/glass cap that has to a cork inside the bottle.( I'm not sure if the cork is attached to the cap) How to do I open the bottles? I've read some other forums that have people saying to put the ink bottle under hot water for a few minutes. I haven't tried this method yet, since this method is usually for the lids that screw on, but can this method also work on glass ink bottles?

Pictures would help. Someone might have the same set.

Right now I'm guessing to just twist while pulling, similar to a wine/champagne bottle. Don't do that in mid-air. Set the bottle down on a stable surface (table, counter). It came as a set, there shouldn't be any special techniques.

Maybe there's a special corkscrew just for inks ;)

I was going to be a wise guy and say, "Shake it up real hard, turn it upside down and PULL!" but I see it's your first post. So, I've been kind and let you know I can be a wise acre sometimes....

Corks don't usually need to be put under water. I imagine that if you can grab hold of a little bit of the top, even just the edge with a pliers opened to the wide setting, you can gently rock it back and forth to set it free. Don't turn it upside down while in the attempt, though! :-)

I just put an ice cube on top of the cap...and let it melt...shrinks the cork. Twist gently... right and then left...until it loosens. Hot H2O only causes the cork to expand...making extraction more difficult. Never use pliers 'cus it will crack the cap. It happens a lot. If you heat up the cap, there is a good chance the cork will separate from the glass / plastic , whatever cap. Then you're sc----d!

I hope you can see the pictures. If you can I'm sorry about the quality, it was because of the flash.

Is it something that looks like THIS?

Bottles of this kind are sealed with WAX. The only way to open them is either with fire or brute force. Grab the cork and twist it until the wax breaks. Or melt it off with a candle or something.

Har, har, that's a good suggestion. Just don't ask him first if he has an original bottle with the waxed lid, or the successor made out of plastic.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
