Buy One Cross Pen, Get One Free At Staples

I was just in Staples and they had sign over their Cross Pen display, buy one Cross of $35 value or more and get a second pen free after rebate. I'm new to the forum, so forgive any breach of etiquette, but it seemed like a darn good deal.

Now the big question--does one's local Staples have fountain pens? As it happens, there's something else I need there, so I'll check it out.

No harm done, but I believe this type of information is generally posted in Market Watch.

I came here for the pictures and stayed for the conversation.

It also depends on which Cross pen they are flushing out of the warehouse.

Some of the firm's recent designs have been extemely unpopular.

This means in another ten years, the ones that escape the land fill, will be highly prized by collectors and go for a premium on Ebay.

YMMV

The Staples near me had fountain pens. I can't remember which line they had. They were selling for $49.99. I have never used a fountain pen in my life, so I didn't want to go just grabbing a pen.

1st Prize: A Cross pen

2nd Prize: Two Cross pens

:)

Unfortunately, I can't think of one current production Cross pen I'd like to have, let alone two. I just hope they wise up one day or get bought out by someone that will bring the quality back.

The one useful modern pen was the Cross Solo. The sections/nib assemblies fit perfectly into a Parker Big Red RB. Now knowing that, I can't find any.

Ok, I went into Staples to see what was left. I ruled out all Ball Point Pens because I have plenty of those in my life. Here is what they had. I'd like people's opinions on these, since I am quite new to all this:

Cross Aventura Fountain Pen

Cross Edge Roller Ball

Cross Stratford Roller Ball

Cross Century II Roller Ball

The only I ever owned was an old Cross Century. I bought some Fisher Space Pen Refills for it, and still use it.

Cross Aventura Fountain Pen

Cross Edge Roller Ball

Cross Stratford Roller Ball

Cross Century II Roller Ball

Here's my .02:

Cross Aventura Fountain Pen --- decent pen, fairly simple construction; was one of my first starter FP's; decent choice, but not overly durable.

Cross Edge Roller Ball --- gimmick; clever, with decent performance, but has that Cross quirk in which the design answers questions no one asked.

Cross Stratford Roller Ball --- fairly certain this is a ballpen instead of a SelecTip; either way, better pens out there for less money.

Cross Century II Roller Ball --- good pen, solid example of what Cross can do well; but, here again... better pens out there for less money and not so small, either.

With due respect to the good people at Cross, if you find yourself in Staples and wanting a bulletproof non-FP, just grab yourself a Parker Jotter and a pack of Gel refills. It's not an FP and it may seem to strike somewhat low on the excitement meter for a new member of your pen arsenal, but...

it's barely ten bucks out of pocket,

it's the most bulletproof design you can find that isn't a stainless steel Zippo lighter,

the refills are easily findable all over the place (especially if you live in a large city that quite unfathomably does not have an actual pen store...I don't name names, I merely look in the direction of my hometown of Orlando and whistle),

the gel refills writes with the same effortless liquid smoothness otherwise only findable in an actual fountain pen,

and it's the pen Don Draper seems to use pretty so often, so there's that.

; )

Cheers.

Of the four, the Century II is the only one that floats my boat.

But I already have one two and that is enough.

I noticed a couple of Townsends on the Summer Sale, but again have and have no more need....

YMMV

LOL on the Don Draper comment. I thought I was the only one who noticed that on the show. But can't tell if they are the Jotters with the raised button or the indented button (which didn't come out till 73).

Though this is the Cross forum I really like my Affinity Ballpoint (with a bunch of Jotter backups:)).

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
