I wish Montblanc good health and may they continue in whatever path they choose. I am a customer of their fountain pen ink which is of the best out there. They have a diverse range of excellent products for all to enjoy. Peace...

hey! when did this get serious?...now back to the silly...a MB,a Parker 51 and a Pelikan M800 walk into a bar...each with a Rolex around their wrists.......

now... some one write a punch line.

The MB takes out his walkie talkie and says to the M800 " hey take a look at the Rolex the P 51 is wearing, is that a fake? " the M 800 presses the talk button on his walkie talkie and whispers........................" copy that "

Get it? COPY THAT Oh never mind..... :roflmho:

Wow. This thread is very inflammatry. I haven't seen quite a heated debate on FPN for some time.

MB is like the Louis Vuitton group. They are very heavy on marketing, brand prestige and perception. However, they are also affordable (mostly) enough to be mainstream luxury as opposed to really high end. Hence, with increased awareness comes polarised views. Take Holden v Ford!

If I wanted a uniform of sheer extravagance, wouldn't I consider Hermes and in the watch circles, some of the more boutique horological designs, IWC, Patek and a few others come to mind.

However, I disagree with the negative generalisation that only a certain type of person would purchase or use either a Rolex or MontBlanc and the insinutation of snobbery. I don't have a Rolex but would love to buy one for it's reliability, horological history and the fact that I for one, value their movements and timepieces. I should perhaps declare I wear an Omega seamaster for the same reasons and which was gifted to me as a wedding present.

People own a MontBlanc for various reasons. Legal circles and CFO's perhaps for prestige and the fact everyone in their clique carry one. Then there are those who have saved up or inherited one! I value my MB over my other pens only if they write better.

By the way, Writers and vintage MontBlanc are only serviced in Germany.

Crayola's snap.

So do MontBlanc's although not quite as easily... perhaps?

My Omega with it's mechanical movemnt keeps better time than my Quartz Tag Heuer and I'll be damned if I could be bothered working out if that's more accurate than the $10 quartz alarm clock. If I want a device that gives me the accurate time, my iPhone synchs with whatever centralised time server automatically.

I wonder when will the mods come in and close this down. :hmm1:

There's nothing wrong with this thread. My question came from pure scholastic curiosity of why individuals have their own preferences for certain pen manufacturers and if there is any link between the luxury watch and pen markets. This is mainly for an economic project. Judging by your need to post that picture on the 2nd page and the negativity of your posts, you have real sensitivity issues...

MB is like the Louis Vuitton group.

I'd say they're more like the Richemont group, because they own Montblanc.

LVMH owned Omas at one point, but sold the bulk of the holdings to the Xinyu Hengdeli Group.

Thank you for finally showing up after starting a flame.

There are 2 fundamental issues here.

1. If you originally visited the Rolex Forum, why don't you post your question there? After all they have both Rolex and pens discussions over there. Your 'scholarly' research will get the appropriate treatment there. Aren't you looking for the rationale of both Rolex and Montblanc ownership?

2. If you are sincere in your 'scholastic' research, why did you throw a line 'I'm sure all these people use ordinary Bic pens and they either are too terrified of showing their Bic next to their rolex or they just don't know anything much about the world of fine pens'. Isn't this a generalisation/stereotyping to the extreme? If you are as you say you are, for an 'economic project', are you supposed to put in personal feelings into your 'project'? I believe it is you that needs help.

Finally, I took that picture eons ago, but I find it interesting to share with the folks here.

Best regards, Kai

The level of trolling and bashing correlates with a brand's success. You don't see trolls and bashing against most other brands/pens. Why? Because the pens/brands are either extinct or aren't nearly as successful as MB. There is an occasional bit of Parker 51 bashing, because it's a successful model. So MB fans can take trolling and bashing as a kind of acknowledgement to the brand's success and it actually draws attention to the brand. That's what initially drew my attention to MB, and once I actually tried, my first MB, a 149 out of curiosity, I knew instantly that all that bashing was a pile of doo doo. So in a strange way, I should say thanks very much to some bashers for "introducing" me to MB. :happyberet:

So while I do see most of the big name brands get greater amounts of criticism than others I also can't dismiss the fact that in virtually all cases cases the quality of said products and the hype surrounding the brands, along with the cost is typically greatly disporportionate to their competitors, which I can see getting people in a huff.

I also dismiss the notion that regionalized or local service centers matter in some way, really only matter if the pens need service and in most cases people will be able to return a poor performing pen rather than have to send it off.

Speaking for myself I own Rolex and Montblanc and am not overly enamoured with either brand/product....sure they are "good", but as I said before they are no better than any other items I own, they don't bring me any more enjoyment than others, if anything all they do is serve to bring me more negative attention when I use them and interactions with other owners that are less than desireable....but they are both sentimental and I do like the "style" of them.

It's all just BS. I don't use MB pens - as a matter of fact I only like one MB fountain pen, the 149. The rest are very ordinary indeed. And even the 149 is beaten in writing quality by similar models from other brands, like the Delta Dolcevita OS and the Sailor King of Pen. And MB refuses to make the 149 in any other mode other than black, so I don't buy it. Period.

As for watches, I don't wear one. I use my cellphone to see the time - that's all I need. People who spend thousands on watches or pens have a lot more money than common sense. I read somewhere that Warren Buffet wears old suits and uses cheapish pens and watches.

"I don't use MB pens" ...."the 149 is beaten in writing quality"

"People who spend 1000s on watches or pens have a lot more money than common sense" Are you sure? Might they have both in good measure? Some people have made a lot good living because they have common sense.

The Delta and Sailor you mentioned are in a similar price range as a 149 (Delta is less and Sailor is more than the 149)

And on that pithy observation, it seems an appropriate time to shut down the thread.
