Homo Sapiens Dream Nib - What's Is It Like?

dnb

Recommended Posts

I've read interesting things that sound great. However, I'm afraid it might be too soft for me. I have a medium to light pressure, but not light enough to enjoy a flex nib but do like spring.

Can anyone one assist?

Thanks.

What else do we have in life if not to help each other?

Me...I would hardly call it a flex nib. It has some give, it's not a nail either. My touch is med to heavy, I'm having no problems, but I didn't buy the pen expecting a flex nib. My nib is the 1.3 stub and if I want, it can lay down some serious line variation. But I use it just to write, nothing fancy. It's also set up on the dry side, my preference, and I like feeling the paper under the nib. There's been a lot of discussion about these pens and once you get it exactly the way you want it, and this is hard to explain, it writes like no other pen I've used. I don't want to put it down.

JELL-O, IT'S WHATS FOR DINNER!

Springy is the best description I think I've heard. The nib has a nice spring or bounce to it that allows for some line variation (though my writing style doesn't really take advantage of this)and allows for some feedback without feeling as stiff as a nail.

I don't have experience with a great breadth of nibs, but it's my favorite of those I've tried thus far.

dnb,

I have a HS 1.3mm stub and can´t notice any "springiness". It produces line variation, sure, cause it's a stub, but not for the springy nib. I tried a HS fine and it seems more like a springy nib. In my opinion, HS nib has a bit less flexibility than a Pelikan M1000, if you have tried one.

As you like a tad of spring, I think you will love the Homo Sapiens nib.

Neither of mine seem flexible or springy, but they aren't stiff as a nail either. Both write very smoothly.

It is not a flex nib. Do not try to use it as such or you'll have a sprung nib.

Richard Binder stated before he has already serviced several sprung dream nibs.

Yep. Not a flex, or even semi flex nib. It's smooth, and very wet, with a slight amount of give to it, sort of like some gold nibs. However, it's very wet, and if you're not using the best paper, prepare for bleed through and feathering.

Right on the money! But, there is nothing like it, with my broad, I barely have to touch the paper to produce a thick wet line, which I love. I am an aspiring author (who isnt these days ) and will often right up to thirty pages a day. With my homo sapiens, I get no cramps or fatigue, I can just focus on the task at hand.

I will not add to the descriptions already posted here. I will just say it has become my daily writer. I love it!!!

  • 4 weeks later...

i will label it more on the nail side than on the soft side; i've several gold nibs that are springier than this.

On the other side, the HS nib is pretty wet on its own with the slighest pressure, so i see no need to even apply moderate pressure to write. just don't expect any line variation.

Please check out my blogshop for fountain pens and inks at http://inkoholicanonymous.blogspot.com/ Reviews of my pens can be found there too!

Now you know why I have so many Visconti - very restful to churn out page after page. Clairefontaine, Rhodia, Quo Vadis - good paper lets me fly. Try the BB some time. They're like ice cubes on the hood of a hot car!

What's the best price for a Sapiens with a 1.3 nib? Love the feel of the barrel/cap material.

You can find some on ebay for <$400 -however I'd go with Bryant at Pentime - He's great to deal with and though not the cheapest if you do experience the imfamous Visconti Q/C issues he'll sort them out for you.

+1 on dealing with Bryant. I got my Visconti Cosmopolitan from him that had issues with the nib, and he promptly arranged to have it adjusted at Mike-it-work. Two weeks later, the pen was in my hand and writing like a dream. Given that a large part of the reason to purchase an expensive fountain pen like the Homo Sapien is the improved writing experience, it is worth buying it from someone (whether Bryant or a good B&M store) that you can be sure will stand behind the product.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
