Australian Sheaffers

I'm a big Sheaffer fan, but one of the areas I've never known much about is the production they apparently did in Australia. Where was the factory and when was it operating? Were the models they were making the same as the ones we know in the US, or were they different? How widely available are these pens in the US? Sooner or later I'd love to add one to my group as something a little different.

Hi Ray,

The factory was in Melbourne ( suburb of Heidelberg). The earliest models I've seen are snorks , so I assume they started sometime after '52 and '73 rings a bell as an end date ( with a lot of ????). The models appear the same, but snork production continued up to '62 ( again with ?) . The quality appears very good but you do see a combination of US and Aust. parts ( ie Aussie nibs, US barrels ) , the numbers I've seen may (?) mean they came this way rather than a later mix and match. Strangely these Aust. made pens are rather difficult to find here!! , most seem to have been exported to the UK.

Models seen: snorks, tip dips, PFMs, Imperials and Targas plus one unidentified model.

While not certain I think a member of the Sheaffer family lived in Melbourne ( although not a Sheaffer surname) as my mother in law remembers a family member going to school with one of her children.

An Australian Crest, the case is correct as this is a later one from the barrel imprint. Like you I'd like to add some more Aussies to my little collection but they are hard to find, good luck.

Regards

Hugh

Peter Ford at Melbourne Vintage Pens (no affiliation etc., only a satisfied customer) always seems to have some Aussie-made Sheaffers for sale on his site. He may also be able to help with history.

I've always wondered too. Haven't been able to find any info whatsoever on Sheaffer's Australian operations. (and since we're at it - how about the Canada operations?).

Of the vintage Sheaffers I've come across a significant number seem to be Australia-made, and I assume that's because of Singapore's proximity to Australia and history as a British colony.

canadian sheaffers were made in ontario, and often had features that aren't found on any other sheaffer pen, like(i remember seeing one somwhere on this forum) a full size sheaffer balance junior...

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
