I finally got my MB 149. I bought it from Tom Heath. It is a 70s-80s pen with some flex, in excellent condition with box and all the papers. I just have to decide which pen to rotate out now so I can test the MB.

Hello there!

I´m quite new to this network and new at collecting and using fountain pens. But I do really enjoy reading the info here and using my Duofolds International (sterling) and Centennial (jade green). I have some other pens that I´m fondling with (a MB 220, Platinum poster, Aurora Hastil sterling ..).

Anyways, on the brazilian ebay has appeared a MB 149 (or so the seller claims) for a good price (about 220$) that I´m interested in. I wouldn´t know how to spot a fake one though and was wondering if I could get some advice here. This is the link:

Your opinions would be much appreciated, as fake MB are abundant in Brazil. Thanks a lot!

Link says "Page does not exist"; there are extraneous characters at the end of your link. With those removed it works. Nothing in the pictures looks fake and if the pictures are actually of what is being sold you should be ok.

I can't see the link even when I remove some extraneous characters.

Take off everything after the JM

I don't know how these postings work (new to the forum/group). But I would like to bring to everyone's attention that the level of fakes has, indeed, reached the next level. There are fakes (copies if you like) that glow red, well engraved nibs, and yes, piston fillers.

I recently purchased a 149 and 146 from eBay. The 149 arrived first. Very unimpressive. My best description was a poor Japanese nib (tines weren't off). Then i started looking at backlights, and "pix" but the little things in public said ok.

Then my 146 showed up. Best description, writing was like trying to push butter on a heated glass (glorious!). Then I noticed the 146 was slightly heavier than the 149 (knew that was wrong). Upon closer examination, the "rectangle" on the clip did not roll al the way to the cap body, and was a different sheen.

I apologize for the lack of pics, but I had to return the fake to get my refund. Ebay's only reporting feature is to go through the seller (who told me they got it at an estate sale, and not to bid on it when they relist it). I will post pics when my normal camera is fixed to point out the specifics, but the fakes are getting better and just wanted all to be aware.

Ebay Brazil is just full of MB fakes. They even sell the components openly.

I was following a 145 listed by that same seller - it had a known fake serial number, so I reported it. Definitely stay away.

That listing is clearly not a 149, and almost certainly not a piston filler. The shape looks to me like a 145, but since it's fake it could be any size. The sheen of the gold looks wrong, it has no ink window, lettering on the cap doesn't look right (not recessed & sharp enough). I still haven't seen strong evidence of a counterfeit piston-filled pen.

I've never seen a fake 146 or 149 that has a correct piston filling system, a correct ink window in the barrel, and a correct nib.

That's not to say there aren't fake web-sites showing pictures of authentic pens, but not selling them as there are plenty of those.

My question now is, can we instantly assume all 149 piston fillers are legit as previously stated?

You can't as the current Korean 149 demonstrator copies attest.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
