Mb 145 Question

Recommended Posts

I just received my 145 in the mail and it feel a bit off.

The Good

a) The inside of the clip says Pix.

B) The Meisterstück looks correct and pretty close to my store bought 144

c) The nibs looks authentic (although a little scratchy)

The Bad

a) The converter it came with was fake.

B) The box and the pen did't match (Box said M nib, pen says F nib)

c) The seller vanished when I asked him for more info!

Can anyone tell me if its the real deal?

(Sorry the pics are a little hazy)

Why do you think the converter is a fake? Do you have a pic?

I cant post pics, but the Star and Name (Montblanc) were printed and not etched on the converter.

Fake converter is not a big deal. They are relatively cheap are readily available. Feed looks kind of fishy, I have never seen that kind of MB feed design but I can be wrong. If you want to verify authenticity of your MB, shine a strong light on the cap. If you see a red tint through the resin, than you pen is real, if not it's fake.

Looks legit to me.

I agree, the nib is a Montblanc nib and so is the cap. Looks like the real deal to me too...

Feed threw me off too! I'll look for a flashlight!

Okay it look pretty reddish to me (almost a faint purple). Does that feed look legit to anyone/

The slight red tint is always good, if it's not there then you really can be pretty sure it's a fake. BUT, many fakes also know about that and so use plastics that glow ruby.

I think it pretty much boils down to the feed and whether the seller resurfaces or not.

How much does MB charge to authenticate a pen?

There are 4 converters in the market, see photos below

A is the current Mont Blanc Converter for 144 & 145, it is screw-in type

B is the predecessor model to A, it is screw-in type

C is not MB converter, it is from another fountain pen brand, it is push-in type

D is a FAKE one

I have done some tests, here are my findings:

1. A, B and C can be fitted perfectly to both Authentic MB 144 & 145

2. C can also be used for MB Starwalker

3. A & B do not fit into FAKE MB 144 & 145

4. D does not fit in Authentic MB 144 & 145

5. Fake 144 & 145 can use C

Result

If the pen can use A, B & C, the pen is Authentic

If the pen can use D, this is a FAKE MB pen

Authentic Starwalker can only use C

Thanks for the help. Here is what I found, I have A & C type of convertors.

Real MB 144 (Store Bought) C fits, A its perfectly snug, also can screw it all the way in

Fake MB 144 (Picked up for 20 bucks, its a cheap fake) A does not fit, C fits

MB 145 in question, C fits, but feels a bit out of place, too springy in my opinion. A fits but can not be screwed in.

Could it be that the person replaced the nib section with a fake but gave me the body of a real 145?

I think your pen is fake. i base this on the feed photos and the way the tipping is attached to the nib in your original post. i have not opened the tinyurl images. I have come across some excellent fakes that can fool/atleast confuse the buyer, I have documented one here: link

Thanks Hari, very informative post! I'm actually quite surprised at the quality of this pen. If the feed had been close of my existing MB then I would not even have questioned the other anomalies (i.e. Sure he could have mixed up the boxes and sent me the wrong box, sure he could have lost/broken the original feed and picked up a knock off)

I mailed the seller a few days ago, got no response. I'm going to open a case with eBay and see what happens.

There are a large number of Fake Chopins of excellent copy floating around... One way to spot a fake, if you have it at hand, is to look at the "feeder case". It is of poor quality in the knock offs and excellent in the original item. Other is the marvellous way MB welds its tip to the nib. No faker can match that. if they can, then they can probably make a good living making their own nibs...

BTW, what is the clip serial number on your pen?

I think the pen is fake. I have latest FAKE 144/145 FP,BP and RB, I paid $30 each. I have to say they are "very good" fake pen. Except for the converter, it is very hard to tell the difference if I do not compare with the real pen carefully. I did find some faked 144/145 on eBay recently. Be very carefully if you are going to buy any new MB 144/145 from eBay.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
