Whatever Happened To Newman Pens?

Hey All,

So probably 7 or so years ago, I purchased one of the first edition Newman Pens that came with a collectible knife. I met Mr. Newman and he talked about a second run of his pens. I haven't seen or heard anything about Newman Pens since I bought that pen. Does anyone have any idea what happened?

I found one over at Nibs.com, but thats about it.

I have one of his pens ( South Sea Bronze) and treasure it

http://www.calgarype...m/Database.html has the measurements and some pictures.

My information is that sadly the maker, Jim Hickman, died. A great loss.

Why carry one pen when four will do!

Anyone know how many different styles of pens he made? It seems that he made at least two different versions, The South Sea Bronze and the larger version. Are there any others?

  • 7 years later...

I am late... very late to this party. I have recently aquired a Newman Pen. It is a beautiful dark blue green with pearl shimmers. The clip is silver and the nib is 18kt.

I am looking for any information on the filling/ cartridge system for this pen. Thanks.

I see the links above do not work anymore. I did find some information on Richard Binder's web site:

http://www.richardspens.com/?page=xf/2002/10.htm

I also found a Newman Pen being auctioned last April here:

Don't know if this works or not, good luck. Beautiful pen by the way.

I have actually found out quite a lot.

On a whim I emailed Richard Binder and got a reply. Also, I spoke with some of the gentlemen above who has also done some research.

It is an amazingly crafted pen. It is not Sterling Silver as I though, it is likely rhodium overlay. Mr Binder informed be that Jim was a stickler for quality and insisted on using gold for the metals in his pens. It my pen in particular, the resin has been enhanced with pearl dust to give it a shimmering effect. It does use a standard universal ink converter, although I still am curious about the threads in it (threads similar to a mintblanc). I inked and wrote with the pen Once then promptly cleaned and flushed it. It writes like a dream. It now sits in a tarnish resistent pen case (I made) and gets looked at and polished as needed. I have a few precious pens I refuse to carry with me.

Hope that helps.

I have seen one for sale on eBay. It started at $2000. Last I looked it was $500. It is a clear demonstrator.

Graystranger- I joined the (starcity ROA) pen club. Ill bring it to the next meeting.

Great, I would love to see this pen. If it were me, I would ink it up and use it!! With the quality materials Newman used it should outlast several lifetimes. So glad you got your answers.

I saw the title of this topic and thought it was about the Japanese Newman brush and rollerball pocket pens (that used Japanese calligraphy ink cartridges) from the late 70's... Guess not :-)

Thats OK. I was confused about it when I started looking at first as well. I do know the Japanese pens of which you speak 😁

You should most definitely share your photo of care instructions. Knowing of course the address and phone number of The pens maker are invalid due to his death many years ago.

I tried to include the two photos (top half and bottom half) of the paper, but it did not work. I have posted several dozen photos, so I'll try to get it to work this time. The first time the images were in the .png format. That may be why FPN would not add it to my post. Here is a .jpg image format.

I tried. Both using the full editor and by pasting the image here. I get an error message both times that I am "... not allowed to use that extension on this site." Funny, the file extension is .jpg. So, the image is not being posted.

It is not really detailed instructions, but rather just general info about the pen and info on the care of the pen: polishing cloth, flushing, etc. Sorry.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
