Southworth Résumé paper

Recommended Posts

I just splurged on a brand new box of Southworth Résumé paper in ivory -- 32 lb. and 100% cotton. It's a little on the heavy side... I don't know why I selected the 32 lb instead of the 24 but it sounded more exciting and it's kind of cool. As far as wring goes, it's nice for fountain pens with regular nibs but exceptional with my flex nibbed Wahl and Waterman Hundred Year pen. With super-flexy dip nibs it's just fantastic!!!! :D It really shows off the shading of flex nibs.

100 sheet box at Staples: $10.50.

I'm happy to mail off a sheet to anyone who wants to see it up close. ;)

I haven't used it in a while, but I remember it was quite fp friendly. My batch is 8.5 x 11 in, ecru, a smooth finish and a nice thick feel. It also has a watermark and matching envelopes are available. Glad you like it, and thanks for reminding me I had some!:)

Isn't it funny how we forget about things we already have. Sometimes I try to remind myself to go "shopping" on my own shelves.

Greetings all,

I should have posted this one myself, but it is so second nature to me, I guess I don't give it much thought. I was turned on to this paper several years ago through my affiliation with the National Résumé Writers Association.

I keep it in stock in both 24 and 32 lb. weights, (both weights are 100% cotton bond), and in both white and ivory. (It used to be available in gray and blue too, but I believe those colors have disappeared with the changing trends).

The paper makes an excellent presentation and yes, it is PERFECTLY suited for fountain pens too. Go out and get some. The added bonus for me is I can buy as much as I want and deduct it off my taxes! :D

Best wishes,

Sean

PS: Thanks for posting this jbb- you did what I should have done a long time ago. :(

What do you know! I have some, too! I'll have to try it out with my superflex dip pen. Thanks for the reminder, lol

Corniche,

Does this paper have a smooth finish or does it have some texture? I like to cut 8.5 x 11 paper in half to make smaller sheets of stationery. This means that I'm writing across the grain. On smooth paper this doesn't matter, but sometimes it does on textured paper.

Also - is the 24lb. as good as the 32lb. when it comes to feathering and bleed through?

So many pens, so little time!

Is the Resume paper the same, performance wise, to Southworth's 25% Cotton Colors & Texture's Series Fine Granite? I know the composition is different, but I'm hoping some of you may have used both and can comment. TIA

Hello Judybug,

The paper does have a little "tooth" to it; it is not smooth like copy/fax paper, but it is not as rough as some other papers I have used.

I have NEVER experienced ANY feathering or "bleed-through" with this paper.

Best wishes,

Sean

Hello Southpaw,

I have this paper- I'm going to do a quick evaluation and post it here in a few minutes.

Hello Southpaw,

I also have the very paper you mention- Southworth 25% in granite. I just did a quick evaluation using the two papers and 3 pens:

PAPER USED:

- Southworth Exceptional Résumé Paper; white; 100% cotton bond; 32 lb. weight

- Southworth Designs Paper; granite; 25% cotton

PENS & INKS USED:

- A Sheaffer Student loaded with my own ink.

- A Pelikan M200 loaded with Waterman’s Blue-Black

- A Waterman Hemisphere loaded with my own ink.

Here are the results, (description only- no photos):

The Southworth 25% paper is less toothy than the 100% résumé paper. I also seem to get slightly broader lines on the 25% paper than I do on the 100%- although there is NO feathering on EITHER paper; however, all the pens lay down a slightly broader stroke on the smoother finished 25%.

If you write with a smooth flowing, flourished hand, I recommend the 25% because it offers much less resistance and near equal performance. If you write with a slow, deliberate hand, than I recommend the 100% because it is ideally suited to that style of writing.

Personally, I use the Southworth 25% for personal correspondence and the 100% for business use, (of course the only “writing” I do on this paper, [if any], is to sign by name).

Best wishes,

Sean

out of curiosity, how do these compare with the 24lb Exceptional Resume Paper?

Greetings all,

Thank you for the "thank you's," I'm glad I'm finally able to help you people with something.

At any rate, my results for the 24 lb. paper are:

The 32 lb. is a little "toothier" than the 24 lb. paper. However, the line stroke is the same.

The 32 lb. paper is also more cardboard like- it reminds me a little of the cardstock paper you use when you're making your own business cards.

Best wishes to all,

Sean

I use the 24 lb. for sending out resumes. It's been my paper of choice ever since law school and it's great. I've never experienced any bleed through with it, nor does it feather in my experience.

If anyone has 9 or 10 sheets of the Southworth 24# (ivory, ideally) that you would like to trade for a dozen of any of the following, please PM me!

Classic Crest Writing, 24# Smooth, Solar White (8.5 x 11)

Classic Crest Linen, not sure of the weight, very nice for snails (Monarch size)

Strathmore Writing, 24# (8.5 x 11)

HP Laserjet 32# (8.5 x 11)

G. Lalo "champagne" color laid paper (from tablet, but I'll try to peel carefully so you don't get an unattractive edge) (Monarch size)

Or I have a bunch of ink to trade also, if that is of more interest.

Isn't sanity really a one-trick pony, anyway? I mean, all you get is one trick, rational thinking! But when you're good and crazy . . . ooh hoo hoo hoo! . . . the sky's the limit!

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
