Does Refrigeration Extend Ink Shelf Life?

Hi,

Recently, I had a gentleman give me 16 almost full bottles of ink for free. The problem is, I had about 8 of my own. There is no way I'm going to use this up quickly and I'm afraid it will expire. I keep it in a cool, dry, dark place (a box in my office). But, would refrigeration extend the shelf life of the ink?

 

Does anyone have any other tips for extending life? I'm thinking of ordering some poly-cone caps to replace the paper-lined ones that Noodler's ships their ink with. They create a better seal....

I guess it could slow down evaporation, but it could potentially create precipitates, too, if the change in temperature was enough for solids to drop out of solution. Based on what I've been reading here your best bet is probably the better caps and then keep storing the ink as you have. Adding a few mL's of distilled water if it has been a long time since using the ink seems to be about all that needs to be done.

Ink doesn't spoil. Keep the jars sealed, away from light and excess heat and they'll last for years. I have bottles of ink that I rarely use that are over 20 years old and nary a problem with them.

Congrats on the inky windfall! :)

 

I think most people simply keep the ink in a cool dark place and it is fine. What colors did you get?

This just happened to me, too! A member here sent me 15 bottles, including an Iroshizuku, and refused any sort of payment. I wonder if we have the same benefactor...

Help out a poor college student! ^-^' INK SAMPLE CLEARANCE! - Parker Penman Sapphire samples, Palomino Blackwing, Palomino Blackwing 602, and empty vials available.

Adding a few mL's of distilled water if it has been a long time since using the ink seems to be about all that needs to be done.

 

I'll keep that in mind if i notice that they change in properties at all.

What colors did you get?

 

I got 2 bottles of Pelikan Blue-Black, waterman black, Noodler's legal lapis, and virtually every blue color private reserve made to my knowledge. some are unopened. some are almost 50% gone. But free is free... no complaints. :)

      Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

      It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

      Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

      @asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
