Mb Meisterstuck Case Damaging Pens

I have never carried my 149 or celluloid 144 outside of my home, because I never had a pen case I was confident in to carry the jewels of my collection. This changed on christmas day when my girlfriend got me a 2 pen meisterstuck pouch. I had assumed that MB made the best case for MB pens. I must say, that I was sort of uncomfortable with the interior of the pouch when I first stuck my finger in one of the slots. The interior finish is hard, and not the softest/cushion-y material I had envisioned. I quickly swept this disappointment out of my mind and shoved my two favorites into their respective slots. However, last Friday I was admiring the beaty of my 149 when :yikes: I noticed two very minute scuffs on the cap of my 149. This momentarily upset me, but I decided I could always polish them out because they seemed so minute and shallow. Once again, I found myself at work gazing into the depth of my pen, when what do i see but a scratch!!!! Once again, a minute/hairline scratch, but a scratch nonetheless. Now, this pen is either in my hand, or it is in the pouch, and it is cared for like the child I hope not to have for many years. The scratch is located above the two small scuff marks. I began to make the assumption that the pen case has been damaging my pen, because it is always placed in the same position within the case. Anyone have any experience with this leather pouch? The tag inside is right about where the scratch is on my pen.

Hi PWK5017, I have the same said 2-pen meisterstuck pen case and I must admit I am nervous about the fact that the internal separator only seems to go down about one third of the way. It is clear that all such cases ought to be lined, and in particular all 2 or 3-pen holders clearly must have full internal separators. Crazy oversight by MB.

I’ve been carrying my MB 145 with a MB 163 Rollerball together for a number of years but I haven't noticed a scratch on either yet, despite them both being slim enough to jostle around. However, I have recently taken to carrying my new MB 149 around in it and my WE Thomas Mann, and as I like to partner my pens with another, given the size difference, there is bound to be opportunity for knocking and therefore slight damage. However, so far I can't spot any sign of damage, and whilst the case is roughly textured inside, without a microscope (which I would be too scared to use) I cannot see any damage caused by the case itself.

My pen holder sits in my inner jacket pocket until I get to the office, when I take it out and the pens out from it. I don’t fling my jacket around, so there isn’t much opportunity for the pens to knock together.

Having read your post however, I will ensure I am a little more careful when I’m carrying my pen holder and picking up my baby daughter, who has a tendency to cling to my jacket, possibly crushing my poor pens!

Having read your worrying post, I am now desperate for an appropriate pen holder. Any suggestions?

Pavoni.

In my view, the Meisterstueck Pen Pouch offers more than adequate protection for my two 146's.

I used to be a pen nut who worried about every little scratch and moved past that.

I am now a much freer and happier pen nut.

With my first MB, I obsessed over every little blemish. Since then I have learned that to get full use out of a product or tool you will have to accept small marks and scuffs, it's bound to happen. There's no point in leaving a MB in it's box just in case it gets scratched!

It must be noted however, that MB's 'Precious Resin' or AKA 'Glorified Plastic', but that's another discussion, is nowhere near as scratch resistant as MB claim it to be.

I see your point about being "too crazy" about scratches, marks, etc. I used to obsess over my car. Every slight mark it picked up would make me ill. However, the question I am asking is, what case should I be using to adequately protect my pens? I would hope that $150 would be sufficient to acquire a case. I am not so upset about the contemporary 149, but I am very concerned about my 50s MBs. I sort of consider myself to be a steward of those pens, because they simply cant be sent off to an MB service center to be repaired. The two vintage pens I have are very close to mint(they dont have the gold in the blank knob numbers). I would like to have the option open to preserve my pens while using them.

Hello, I have a great sympathy for you. I always check for any new scratches and if there is any, it upsets me all day!! I have ordered a new polish from Germany through this Pen Forum. At present, I am using Tryphoon polish from USA. I do not store my pens in MB cases any more. I carry around 4 MB pens in my pocket including inner jacket pen pouch, at work and try to keep it separate so that they are not touching each other to avoid scratches. Good luck. Htin

A pen case should not scratch your pens. They should protect, not damage.

So far though, I've been lucky with my two Montblanc Sienna 3 pen cases. My son has the same model, although mine were used, his is new. No scratches.

However, other cases purchased on eBay, badly scratched some of my vintage celluloid pens. Those pouches have been retired. I keep my celluloid pens in a vintage zippered Montblanc case. It has a velour, or felt, interior and never leaves the house.

One of my cases and 2 vintage MBs.

Dear Patrick,

an option would be to get a cloth lined pen case. Preferably white cloth or flock. coloured cloth can leach the colour onto metal or lighter parts of a pen. A yellow gold Rolex is now more like pink gold because I placed it in a red Rolex pouch for a period of time. I rather like the colour change but you might not.

Alternatively, go down to a MB store and ask for a few pen pouches that are given away when you send in a pen for service. These are flat rectangular white flock pouches with drawstrings to accomodate 1 pen. You can place the pouch inside your case.

Stay well,

Solomon, thanks for the tip. I, myself, have the 2 and 3 pen MB pouches and just noticed the leather separator piece only goes down about 1/4 and can imagine the possible of the lower barrel "knocking" against each other.

A little disappointed at the design.

Regards all.

One of the things I like about modern, "run of the mill" pens is that I never worry about little marks. I don't even polish them. I use them as serious workhorses. If after years of use they accumulate enough marks to make me want to do something about it, I have the simple option to send it in to MB for a replacement part. In the meantime, I just use them freely without obsessing. If I had a beautiful 50s 149, I'd be more careful.

I just realized that the leather pouch the Montblanc 147 Traveller comes in can cause extremely tiny scratches when you take the pen in and out. These scratches are extremely fine and are along the axis of the pen!

I use aston leather pouch, when i am feeling like millionbucks i use visconti zipper flip top thingy.

i cant afford a MB case and now i see it scratches our pens if you move around significantly.. why should we buy a MB case at that price if it do not prevent scratches?

In the case of the 147 Traveller, the case comes with the pen. The scratches are very fine and difficult to see except under proper lighting. The pen still looks very shiny, and I only realized there were scratches when I looked at the pen really closely today.

I unfortunately have the same worries about the MB Siena pen case as well since I bought it. I was quite disappointed for that price. Then again, Montblanc isn't actually making them. BUT I have noticed that the Montblanc zip pouches are much better, some are much more expensive too. The Westside two-pen zip case is on my wish list. The inside is lined with the textured soft leather and each pen has it's own loop, similar to the Boheme zip cases.

I keep thinking about selling some of my pens but all that happens is I keep acquiring more!

To protect my celluloid and safeties, ironically I don't count on any Montblanc cases at all. I find them to be flimsy in construction, odd in material selection (either too hard or too soft), and more about looks than actual function or practicality.

I learnt the hard way, and now I trust only Pilot Somes and a sturdy 6-pen Namiki Pensemble wrap to protect my pens.
