Lamy Vista Vs. Safari Vs. Al-Star

I've been using and loving a Lamy Vista for ages. It was one of my favorite pens when I first got into FPs, and it's still a favorite. I ordered a Safari, figuring it was the same pen but opaque. It's not the same pen. The Safari is about 33% lighter than the Vista and doesn't feel as solid. I can write with it fine, but I like the weight of the Vista better. My question is how much the Al-Star weighs. Is it heavier or lighter than the Vista? I'm wondering if maybe I should get one...

Really? Because I feel that the vista is too light and delicate compared to by normal safari. Maybe that is because I got the safari first before the vista? or also because the vista is clear, making it seem more fragile. The Al-star is probably a tiny bit more weighty than either of the safaris. It's much cooler to touch because it's metal and most likely feels sturdier but since it is plated, it gets noticeable scratches easier than the plastic safaris.

I've both the Safari and the Al-Star, but not the Vista. I did just ask to see a Vista at the stationery store earlier today, and thought it was close in weight to the Al-Star, which i thought was a good thing, cos the Safari sometimes feels just a little too light.

Anyway, there's a table of info in this old discussion that you may find useful.

I think the barrel of the al star is larger in diameter.and is just ateeny bit heavier than either the safari or the vista

"Once committed to fight, cut. Everything else is secondary. Cut. That is your duty, your purpose, your hunger. There is no rule more important, no commitment that overrides that one. Cut. Cut from the void, not from bewilderment. Cut the enemy as quickly and directly as possible. Cut decisively, resolutely. Cut into the enemy's strength. Flow through the gaps in his guard. Cut him. Cut him down utterly. Don't allow him a breath. Crush him. Cut him without mercy to the depths of his spirit."

Since it was so easy to do, I just weighed two Safaris, an Al-star, and a Vista on my inexpensive kitchen scale.

Safari: 18g

Al-Star: 22g

Vista: 20g

Note that all are inked, some with cartridges, others with converters, and I didn't compare ink levels. You get what you pay for. ;)

Pilot 78G, B->CI, Pilot Green cartridge

Sailor 1911M, H-M, Sailor Jentle Oku-Yama

TWSBI Diamond 530, M, Pilot Iroshizuku Yama-Budo

Parker "51" Vacumatic, 14K F, Sailor Jentle Yama-Dori

Pelikan M201, Binderized F, Noodler's Green Marine (sample)

Both uninked and without cartridge or convertor:

Vista 17g

Al-Star 19g

The Safari should be exactly the same as the Vista.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
