Noodler's Summer Tanager

I'm a huge fan of orange inks and I constantly buy new shades and makers in order to compare them, all in the search for the perfect orange ink. So when I didn't see a lot of reviews for Summer Tanager, I got curious.

Well, I'm here to stop people from making my mistake. I absolutely HATE Summer Tanager. The bleed through is atrocious, the feathering is awful (especially on cheaper quality paper, but even good quality paper is not immune), the shading is low on most paper (though oddly enough, not on the paper I use for my ink journal), and when the ink dries is seems very matte and dull on the page. Also, it smells awful, in my estimation.

Honestly, I didn't find anything I liked about this ink at all and was very grateful I had only purchased a sample. After trying this out I went scurrying back to Noodler's Habanero, which is an amazing ink.

Here's a shot of my ink journal's index page which shows how matte and lifeless the ink looks compared the Mont Blanc's saffron a few lines up.

Lastly, this is the link to my photo album with my ink review pictures in it. There are a few more of Summer Tanager in there, if you're curious.

Hello saskia_madding,

Sorry the Nst let you down so much, but oooooooooooooooooooo, that MBwf looks very intriguing. :puddle: Me thinks I'll have to look into that one.

All the best,

Sean :)

Great review! And I love the color but I shall heed your warning and opt for Habanero instead. Thanks for the tip! I have Apache Sunset and really like that ink too. Hopefully, the Habanero will be the darker, redder cousin of Apache Sunset.

The new Pelikan Mandarin ink is also quite nice. While lacking shading, an odd effect for me is that while the ink goes on the page light while wet, it darkens as it dries. Darkens to a nice, non-eye blazing, very legible orange. The price is a boot to the wallet, but if you're into the oranges...

  • 3 years later...

Not a big fan of this Ink.. alone... But if you Mix 1/2 Summer Tanger, 1/2 41 Brown... (I call it "Summer of 41")..... with a few drops of red ... you get some pretty cool colors... close to Apache Sunset and colors like that... with my latest mix it's identical to MB Leonardo.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
