Trustworthy Mb Seller?

I went to a Montblanc store this weekend to take a look at the pens and ask for a price. They salesperson said $760, which is exactly the price on Amazon. However, a quick google shows that some places sell them for only $595, such as Montgomery Pens. Is there a difference, and is there a chance that it's somehow a fake?

$760 is the current retail price for Montblanc's flagship fountain pen - the Meisterstuck 149. This is the price (plus tax) you will pay in any Montblanc Boutique in the United States. Montblanc Boutiques are stores that sell only Montblanc - no other brands. Montblanc Boutiques should have the widest selection of Montblanc pens (including limited editions) as well as MB timepieces, MB leather goods (pen cases, wallets, belts, briefcases), and MB cufflinks & accessories. Montblanc Bouiques should also offer the greatest experience and knowledge base - particularly to newbies. The sales staff should be able to walk a client through the process of selecting a nib width to best suit the client's handwriting - just as a good tailor guides the client's choice of fabric and cut to suit their personal style and habitus.

I just bought a MB 149 with an Oblique-Broad nib from our Atlanta Montblanc Boutique in Lenox Square for a birthday gift. The 149 is an amazing pen - its timeless design looks as good today as when it was introduced fifty years ago; and Montblanc's legacy craftsmanship should insure the pen outlasts you to be fought over by your heirs. It is the pen used for half a century by Presidents, Royality, and Captains of Industry around the world. I use one every day - and I have used the same 149 for thirty years.

Montblanc also has a network of Authorized Dealers in addition to their Boutiques. MB Authorized Dealers may be multibrand pen shops, or luggage and gift stores that sell Montblanc. Some internet retailers (like fountainpenhospital.com, artlitepens.com, bertramsinkwell.com) are also Authorized MB Dealers - most are internet extensions of their brick and mortar base multibrand pen stores. But Authorized MB Detailers will not post prices on their webpages - you must inquire and then a price will be emailed to you - usually at a 10-20% discount off the full retail price. If you found a MB price on Montgomery Pens' website, then Montgomery Pens is not an Authorized MB Dealer (or they are in violation of their Dealers' Agreement).

You get the best service and after sale support by buying from a MB Boutique or from a multibrand pen store that is an Authorized MB Dealer - service like nib selection, warranty service, and repairs.

You can find the nearest MB Boutique here: http://www.montblanc.com/boutiquelocator/index_boutiquelocator.php. Authorized Montblanc Dealers are also listed (after the listing for the Montblanc Boutiques).

Don't buy off eBay or other auction sites unless you REALLY know what you are doing. Yes, there are fake Montblancs. Most luxury goods are faked - and some of the fakes are difficult for newbies to spot.

Used Montblancs (usually very gently used or even unused) are sold daily here on FPN in the classified sales forum. Buying used from a known FPN Member is usually about half the cost of a full retail 149 purchased new from a MB Boutique.

Wow, such an incredibly thorough response! That definitely convinced me to buy the pen from the local Montblanc Boutique store.

We should point out that there are authorized MB dealers that sell pens at a discount from the MSRP, Fountain Pen Hospital for instance, but they're not allowed to advertise them. You need to go to their web site and ask for an e-mail quote. Very reliable, very much on the up-and-up, just not a boutique.

i do not understand why one would want to pay full retail at a boutique when you can buy from an authorized dealer fora significant discount. the provenance is the same. why not save some bucks. these authorized dealers are legit.there is no chance that one will get a fake. actually, a sales associate at a montbl boutique boasted to me that he can remove the seal from a writers edition and then put them back on after taking the pen out. that made me not want to ever purchase from that montbl boutique.
