Clogged Lamy Safari Nib Section

Hello,

I have an old Lamy Safari pen which Nib Section is clogged with black Ink. I have tried to flush it with water and also let it bathe in water overnight. Nothing seemed to help, it is still clogged and doesn`t write. Is there any cleaning solution for such a case?

Regards,

10% ammonia/water solution. then rinse it really good. have you done the earbulb trick? in the end, if nothing works, you might try knocking the nib out on a block.

i'll post videos of all this if you have any more questions.

As long as that's lamy or other fountain pen ink in there you'll be fine with the ammonia/water flushing, maybe even step the ammonia up a little, lamy safaris aren't real bothered by strong detergents like some other pens. I've even run mine in a 50/50 simple green/water ultrasonic bath to no ill effect.

Sometimes an overnight soak isn't long enough....sometimes it takes days and days of soaking  I haven't got an ultrasonic cleaner, so for me it's a waiting game. Amazing how much stuff comes out when the dam of dried ink finally breaks loose!

Greetings Penthusiastic,

Try an 80/20 mix, (I wouldn't go higher for an extended soak), of 8 parts water and 2 parts CLEAR ammonia; let it soak overnight. The next morning, run it under a warm to cool tap for 5-10 minutes. Use a couple of Kleenex, (keep moving them around), to leach all the water out of the section's ink channel. When the Kleenex come up dry after holding it to the nib, let the section stand for a day so it can completely air-dry. Then reload the pen and give it another shot. One note here, if the Kleenex aren't soaked with ink and/or they become dry to touch after only one or two applications to the nib; the clog is probably still there.

If it still is clogged and if you're willing to trust I won't flee the country with it- send it to me. I have a commercial grade ultrasonic cleaner- if my machine can't bust the clog- you need a nib replacement. I wouldn't bother with a professional mechanic on this one, because a replacement nib for a Lamy Safari is only around $5 from the Writing Desk in England. A professional pen restorer will charge way more than that. Just lmk.

All the best & good luck,

Sean :)

If you ever decide to knock it out, be sure you have something round that fits the inside of the nipple thing, to hit on the feed nipple perfectly. I ruined a feed the other day, but it also seems like it's a much softer plastic. It was my wife's Lamy joy and I wanted to clean it out b/c she let it sit for a few months and it was bad. So when I went to knock it out, it just smashed away. So now I'm using it with my barrel I turned into an eyedropper and I gave her my section that will still take a converter... ugh. All part of the education.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
