How Much Is Broken Waterman Worth?

Hello everyone,

This is my first post here. I'm a FP enthusiast :-) and I found an older version this pen while clearing out my attic. Mine doesn't have the silver bands on the section near the nib and at the top of the barrel.

My question is: how much is it worth if it has broken parts? Let me explain...

The pen uses international cartridges and had been sitting in a shipping container, for an overseas move, for a long time. When I unpacked, the cap was welded shut, and I tried to unscrew it open, but couldn't by hand. So I took a pair of pliers to it (I know what you're thinking! But I was young...)

Long story short, the cap is broken and no longer has the silver overlay. And some fins on the feed are broken, but luckily the nib is intact. The barrel is fine.

Thanks for your help!

Cheers,

Philippe

That picture is from the LeMan 200 Night/Day collection (I think the silver is the "night"). Gorgeous pen. From what you describe, the only part left intact is the barrel. It could be worth something to people who do "frankenpens" (piece pens together with various parts from other victims), but I have no idea what the value would be.

Ah, youth!

fstrong mentions fins on the feed. The Man 200 does not have them but the 100 does.

Thanks for your reponses!

I'd love to salvage the nib at least, if I can use it in a workable barrel. Do you have any pointers on how I can do that?

I'll search the forums for frankenpens also.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I am not sure of the price point, but I would call Waterman Service Center, and ask about the cost of a new nib (they would probably have you send in the pen). Their phone is 1-800-FINEPEN.

There are also pen repair experts who frequent pentrace.net; they can advise about repair and about frankenpens. Can you post a pic of your actual pen?

1-800-Fine Pen is Sheaffer IIRC, Parker Waterman was 1-800-Best Pen.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
