What's The Difference Between A Pilot 742 And 743?

My favorite supplier only carries the 742. What's the difference between that and the 743?

Thanks in advance.

The body of the 742 is shorter than the 743. Also the 743 has a size 15 nib which is larger and often more responsive than the size 10 which is on the 742.

Yet both are available with the full range of Pilot nibs, e.g. F, M, B, Coarse, WA, Falcon, etc.

Thanks Alkman. That's what I was looking for. I was wondering about the "Coarse" nib. Is it tipped or some sort of untipped calligraphy nib?

I believe there is a difference in the trim level as well. I think the 743 has more rings. But I've been wrong before, so...

The 743 is longer, with larger size nib, and also larger rings. If you were in Honolulu, you could see them yourselves, as I am bringing both to our first pen get together.

I think the diffrence is only minor, you can save money by buying the 742, here is my post comparing the two: link

Thanks Elena, I would gladly attend to your get together. I'm afraid I'm in a galaxy far far away!

Thanks Hari. I like the 743 cap trims better, but due to the advantages I get from my supplier, I'll get the 742 instead.

How do you like the WA nib?

How do you like the WA nib?

It is a good nib, but not more smooth than the rest of the lineup, I don't rotate my pen that much to really take advantage of its point shape. For daily writing, I really like the SF/SFM nibs that Pilot makes.

That's exactly what I'm looking for in a Pilot nib. A soft and springy nib that's the opposite of my Sailor nails.

Now I only need to decide among a Broad, FA or Coarse nib. I already have enough broads in my collection ( a stubby MB, a Pelikan, a Sailor, a Lamy 2000 and a Pilot VP regrinded to oblique italic). I don't know much about the "Coarse" nib, so I'm siding towards the FA.

Do you have any recommendation?

Thanks for your time guys.

I like my FA nib. It's kind of fine if you don't flex. And wet, always.

I dipped and tried a Namiki Falcon (the resin one) a couple of months ago at Dromgoole's in Houston. I liked it very much but was already decided on a Pilot Vanishing Point. I finally walked out with the VP with both a Medium and a Broad nib units. The Broad was grounded on the spot into an oblique italic by Dr. Stephen Pustilnik.

Even not liking the looks of the FA nib, that's what I'm going to get. I "need" a wet fine. I don't know how to use flex, but a semi-flex nib should be fun.

I would recommend the SM nib, try it if you get a chance. I have a 743FA, it is a nice flexible nib but it needs quite a bit of pressure to operate as a flex nib. The SM is very soft, like a brush.

Thanks, Hari. I'll try to get a SM nib on my 742. I've always wanted to try a brush-like nib! :puddle:

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
