Pilot Custom Heritage 912

Bobby Check

Recommended Posts

I have received my Pilot Custom Heritage 912 which I had purchased on eBay from Japan.

Mine came with a Japanese Soft Fine nib which is equivalent to an EF nib here.

This nib actually has some flex. The pen is a pleasure to write with.

Normally I can't write with an EF nib, but this one works!

Here are a couple of pics. The specs and more pics are at:

I bought it from Engeika and I am not aware of others being offered at this time.

Hi - congrats on your new purchase. It sounds like a wonderful pen !

Can you tell me more about the feel of the pen compared to others - the size of the barrel etc ? How supple is the nib compared to a Waterman Man 100 or a late model Duofold ? I like the flex and feel of my Pelikans and Watermans but I've heard that the Pilots are wonderfully supple and a pleasure to write with.

btw - what's the cost of a pen like this ?

I'm not Bobby, but I've got a 912 I really enjoy, as well.

The 912 is very comparable to the Pelikan M8xx in size and feel, in my opinion. Here are some comparison shots I posted a while back. I can't comment on comparisons to a Waterman Man 100 or to a Duofold.

Pilot nibs are excellent, and definitely have some spring to to them. However, I find comparing Japanese nibs to European nibs to be a bit like comparing apples to oranges. I enjoy them both, but Pilot nibs are simply unlike Pelikan nibs.

A quick search on Rakuten shows a price range of ¥14,200 to ¥16,800, convert to the currency of your choice.

I would say the 912 is more similar to an M600 than to an M800, but this is just my opinion. A really nice pen, understated and functional. Good size, good materials, wonderful nibs. I have a couple of them, one with a really nice soft medium (it is not flexible, but "elastic". I mean: it won't write thicker under pressure but the nib bends upwards) and a BB that I had a local craftman to grind into a stub. Beware with B and BB Pilot nibs because they are really broad, not like Platinum's and Sailor's.

Congrats on your new purchase. The pen looks very nice and similar to the Sailor Professional Gear 21kt.

Excuse me, "Are there more available?"

Engeika (Taizo) has this model routinely up for auction on eBay. I've been considering it myself as I find the Professional Gear a little on the short side for long writing session comfort (I don't post the cap). I've done business with Taizo on several occasions and it has been a pleasure each and every time.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
