Nibs For A Lamy Safari

Halden

Recommended Posts

I just bought a Lamy Safari and it is my first FP. I was wondering what Nibs it can take and if you could recommend an online retailer to find them?

Lamy Safari's can take the Lamy nibs and the Lamy Joy nibs. The common sizes are fine, medium and broad, and for the calligraphy nibs it's 1.1 and 1.5

A common source is http://www.jetpens.com/index.php/cPath/625_711 and http://www.peartreepens.com/Lamy-Replacement-Nib-p/lz50.htm

Have fun! It's also the most simple of the fountain pens, IMO, to change nibs/sections out on. I have a fine (for everyday writing) and 2 of the italics - the two smaller sizes. Just a word, though - the sizes run a tad bit broader then the average pen. My fine writes like a medium.

According Jet Pens, also there is 1,9mm Italic Nib. :puddle: I'll try it. I own a Al-Star (like Safari in aluminium) with Medium nib, which is smooth but boring IMO. I do like stub/italic nibs.

Take ASmileForYourScrapbook's advice and try out Peartree at this link Peartree which she also provided. I recently made an ink purchase from them to get some samples and was quite impressed with them.

The one thought I have would be to ponder getting another pen or two. The nibs are pretty cheap (around 10 bucks) but so are the pens. While swapping the nibs isn't hard, it does take a little time, and you might be happier with a couple different pens rather than one pen and 4 nibs. Just a thought.

Also, the pilot 78g is cheap and comes in a variety of nib widths. In fact, the whole pen can be had for under 10 bucks if you shop around. I think in most cases, the write better than the safari anyhow.

I had an xf that wrote like a M. My B writes like a 2B or 3B. M nibs are the only ones I've found to be consistent. And the F I had was finer than my xf.

I cannot confirm this experience. The nib width is very similar to Pelikan nibs and both are running on the wide side. Since I grew up with this nib width scale, is seems to be "normal".

Me neither. Also grew up using pelikan pens who are about the same. I can confirm that there is sometimes an inconsistency between different nibs of the same category on Safari's, which is due to differences in flow probably. I would say this is normal for a pen at this price point?

There is also the "A" nib, which is for beginners; the "LH" nib which is for left handed people; and the oblique OM and OB nibs. As opposed to the italic nibs, those feature a rounded tipping and are designed to help people who hold their pen in a slanted way.

Help? Why am I buying so many fountain pens?

An additional pen maybe a nice idea I will keep that in mind. I am leaning towards a F and maybe the 1.5mm, I currently have the M on my Safari.

I have (about) the full range, ef to 1.9 italic.

The only 'failure' is the 1.1, which is sharp edged.

The EF is close to scratchy, though I guess we shouldn't expect

much more for such a small nib.

Overall I think they are good quality nibs at a very good price.

The outstanding ones for me are the F, M and 1.5/1.9 which I

find lovely and smooth, just the right amount of feedback.

Isn't it just rotten of all those non German pen companies to make narrow nibs and try and pass them off as Broads. :headsmack:

Get a few of the pens in different colors so you know what nib is on what pen....besides which, you can match your ink colors that way if you wish.

I got a chart that shows Pelikan is not as wide as many claim, how ever when I try to fit it here, it gets shoved around so the chart is not readable.

I don't remember where I put another chart, that shows two separate Waterman nib sizes. One is the famous narrow one that everyone compares Pelikan with, the other range of Waterman nibs, is very close to Pelikan.

I couldn't get that to feed into here either.

The 1.1mm nib has a reputation as the best of the lamy Z50 steel nibs - general concensus on this forum and my own experience with 11 of the little devils and they have rounded edges which stop the digging in. As usual though Lamys consistency or lack of it does throw up these counter opinions and thats fair enough.

I do agree about the scratchiness of the EF.

Ten minutes with the 1.1 nib and it's now quite smooth.

I've posted a comparison of the Safari nibs I have,

Up on flickr, seems to be too big to include.

I'm a leftie underwriter, and with four Safari and three nexx M Lamys, have all of the nibs except OB (and yes, it's on my 'to get' list!) I've reshaped the 1.1, 1.5 and 1.9 italic nibs to left oblique, and just eased the corners using micro-mesh abrasive sticks (finest grade). To me, they're all smooth. Love the OM!

Did I see somewhere on FPN that the Joy nib unit (i.e., the nib and section) will fit onto a Safari? Lamy is running a free shipping promotion right now (the code is FALLSHIP), and the Joy nib units can be had for $25 with choice of italic nib. I know that's more expensive than the nibs alone, but it's easier to change the whole unit than just the nibs.

Anyway, no affiliation ... and curious about the interchangeability. HP

All Z50 lamy steel nibs are interchangeable on all current Lamy pens (except I think for the Lamy 2000) The Writing Desk has an excellent and thorough article on the Z50 nibs.

Uh um, slight misreading of your question Hennypenny but as far as I am aware the section on the Joy is the same as the Safari - it is only the Barrel that is (obviously) different. Personally I think $25 is a bit expensive for the section/nib unit when you can get a complete safari for maybe slightly more with shipping and in all the different colors. The Joy nib/sections are generally gloss black only which sorta limits your color choice to Uh ... Black.

Correct, but only joy model 15, not model 11. I gave a full run-down of Lamy Safari/Al-Star/joy section compatibility in a thread a couple of years ago. If my search fu is up to scratch I will find the link.

edit: here is the link. Note that when I refer to joy I mean model 11 only, not 15.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
